Damaged collared opening in the cracked casing at the apex, irregular opening in base. Decoration consists of two sets of three cumferential grooves, one below the collar, the other at the widest point. Height 57mm. Diameter 44mm. Weight 440g. Cast lead or lead alloy 'steelyard' weight of probable Roman date (AD 100-400) . The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular ' globular shaped (conical) in profile. There is no evidence of cast or applied decoration. The remains of a thick iron wire fixing loop is present extending from the upper edge of the weight - the upper part of this loop is lost and the breaks are corroded and worn. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found. It is most…

A cast lead and iron steelyard weight, of probable Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is round in plan and pear-shaped in profile, with extensive iron corrosion at both longitudinal ends where suspension loops are located. There are several vertical cracks caused by corrosion & expansion of the embedded iron. There are no markings and the surface, where not covered in rust, has a well-developed white patination. The weight is up to 26.5mm in diameter and 38.0mm long, and it weighs 88.1 grams. Although steelyard weights were in use from the Roman to post-medieval periods biconical exa…

A complete lead-alloy weight, possibly a spindle whorl of Roman date. The object has a bevelled flat lower face and domed upper face. The object has a central circular 5.10mm Ø perforation. There is no decoration on obverse and reverse and all surfaces appear slightly worn. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical or cylindrical in shape and are decor…

Lead weight. Cast conical to pear-shaped weight, flattened at its top, with a central drilled aperture of diameter 5mm. A series of angled cuts surround the aperture at the narrower end of the weight, in a rough left hand spiral arrangement, and these are perhaps distinct in their origin from other light and adventitious nicks on the body of the object. Patinated. The hole could indicate the provision of a separate loop, a typical feature of Roman steelyard weights. If so, it was withdrawn before corrosion could mark the object. The mass does not seem to relate closely to contemporary…

A lead Roman to Post Medieval weight, dating to AD 43-1800. It is a conical weight with a rounded apex in which an iron loop has been inserted and sealed with lead alloy still visible on the base of the weight. The sides of the weight have traces of iron corrosion as well as scratches and dentings. Weights such as this have been used from Roman through to Post Medieval times and numerous weight-related functions are likely, perhaps as a steelyard weight, standing weight, net weight or fishing weight. Close examples are NLM-ADDC7B, NARC-1D2E44, Diameter: 27.28 mm Height: 4…

Copper alloy and lead weight. Cast sub-pyramidal weight of copper alloy with a square base with rounded arises, tapering towards a raggedly broken end. The broader end retains an insert of badly decayed lead which appears to fill a rectangular hole of 15mm by 6.5mm in the broader opposed faces. The loss of some copper alloy to breakage and some lead to decay leaves the original value uncertain, though this might, when complete, have represented one Roman uncia of 27.3gms. Accompanying material includes numerous later Roman coins. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length: 33.8mm, Width…

The top of the weight has a flat platform (34mm - 39mm diameter), near the centre of which is a depression and iron corrosion staining from the remnants of the iron wire loop. The basal part of the weight tapers to a near-point but flattens a narrow platform (4mm - 5mm diameter). There is also has iron corrosion staining from the iron wire at the ba…

Lead steelyard weight of uncertain date, possibly Roman The weight is of sub-spherical, globular form, with a maximum girth just below the apex (with a length of 41.8mm and a maximum diameter of 39.1mm). The weight currently weighs 320.4g which is reasonably consistent (within 97%) of a Roman libra (pound), equivalent to 327.5g. The corroded remains at the apex are likely to be remnants of the iron loop there is also a smaller iron corrosion stain near the base but off centre.
