A complete cast lead weight, possibly a plumb bob of Roman to Post Medieval date. The weight has a flat circular base with a cylindrical hole which runs up through the weight, drilled off-centre and surrounded on the base by a slight ridge. No mark or decoration is present. The metal is a mid grey to white colour and is worn. The weight is 16.96 mm tall, 25.73 mm tapering to 7.11 mm in diameter and weighs 47.4g. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely. The weigh…

A complete, lead alloy weight dating to the Roman to Post Medieval period c. AD43-1800. The weight is flat and circular with slightly convex sides. One side has a corroded central iron stud partially surrounded by four additional studs all of which stand proud of the lead surface. The studs are partially present on the opposing side but are flush with the surface and the central stud is not visible. Measurements: 62.59mm in diameter, 16.22mm thick and weight 436g. The object was found in close proximity to SUSS-BC244C; which is a Roman biconical weight which may indic…

A cast copper alloy Roman weight which may have functioned as a small spindle whorl AD.50-450. This is a biconvex ring weight with a raised band running around the waist of the object. There is some pitting around the ring's outer surface from corrosion during deposition, the object has a dark green patina. This object likely formed the weight for a spindle, though copper alloy rings of this type could have a number of different functions. The weight measures 21.1mm diameter, 8.2mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 10.48 grams.

An incomplete cast lead alloy conical hanging weight, probably of Roman date, c. AD 43-410. The weight is missing its upper end with suspension element, exposing a hollow conical weight body and the base of an iron shaft, which would have run through the vertical centre of the weight. The base of the weight is rounded and would not have been used for resting the weight as in standing weights. The remains of the weight measure 61.93 mm high, 32.62 mm wide (at base), 29.08 mm thick (at base); it weighs 193 grams.

A cast lead alloy biconical steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period. The weight has flattened bottom with has a small section of corroded iron protruding from the top. A second iron section is visible at the top of the weight which is broken off at surface level. This would be all that remains of the original iron loop. The body is pitted with further evidence of iron staining. This weight measures 22.4mm long, including iron protusion. It is 21.5mm diameter and weighs 38.38 grams. Similar types of weights were used for a long period of time and are usually given a broad…

A lead alloy steelyard weight probably dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The weight consists of a conical lead alloy body with the remains of a separately cast iron suspension loop running vertically through the centre, now missing its loop. The weight is in very poor condition with a crumbling surface and a large degree of iron corrosion and staining on the lead alloy surface. It measures roughly 45 mm in diameter at base, 23 mm high and weighs 171 grams. Numerous examples have been recorded on the PAS database; cf: SF-FB8D63 and WILT-8442F7. Because lead weights are eas…

A incomplete cast lead alloy hanging steelyard weight of uncertain, but probable Roman date. The weight is biconical with a flat base and slightly truncated top. There is a hole running through it from bottom to top which appears to contain the remains of the iron suspension loop. There is damage and corrosion around the central hole. The overall dimensions of the weight are 31.9mm diameter, 25.1mm tall, and it weighs 110.74g. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are difficult to date precisely, although weights of this shape are common to the Roma…

A globular cast lead steel yard weight of possible Roman to Medieval date. This artefact has a corroded iron loop protruding from the top, which has been bent and flattened to the body. The body is also corroded and scarred. These weight are largely undiagnostic and were in use for a long period so dating is usually broad. This weight measures 47.8mm long by 38mm wide and it weighs 304 grams.

Cylindrical lead weight, damaged at one end. The complete end has a iron stub at the centre, probably the remains of a suspension loop made by putting a lengh of wire with a looped top into the lead as it was cast. It is 28.5mm in diameter, 40.5mm long and weighs c.60 grams. Such simple lead weights were often made at home for weighing quantities casually rather than for trade and are difficult to date. Bi-conical lead weights with iron loops were made in the Roman period for use with steelyards, the different shape and rougher casting of this example suggests it may be unrelated to t…

Two cast lead alloy weights with flat bases and domed tops and off centre central piercings. One is circular, 23.3mm in diameter, 8.9mm thick and weighs 25.14 grams. The piercing runs through the weight and is 2.9mm in diameter. One is oval, 20.4mm long by 17.1mm wide by 9.7mm thick by 15.79 grams. The piercing is blocked, by iron corrosion or dirt near the top of the weight and is 4.5mm in diameter. Such simple weights are difficult to date accurately and could be Roman - Post medieval in date.

Cone shaped cast lead alloy weight. The weight has a flat circular base, 18.4mm in diameter, the top is a rough cone shape 14.0mm tall. There is a circular hole, 4.8mm in diameter, running through from the base, where it is very off centre to the tip of the cone which is therefore flat. Such simple weights could be made locally for a range of uses and are difficult to date more precisely than Roman, Medieval or Post medieval. The central piercing would allow it to be put on a string for safe storage or use. It weighs 21.66 grams, 0.76 ounces.

Domed cast lead alloy weight. The weight has a flat circular base, 27.9mm in diameter, the top is an irregular hemi-sphere 17.8mm tall. There is a small, 2.8mm in diameter, off-centre circular hole in the base which may go all the way through, it is filled with mud. Such simple weights could be made locally for a range of uses and are difficult to date more precisely than Roman, Medieval or Post medieval. The central piercing if it goes all the way though would allow it to be put on a string for stroage or use. It weighs 71 grams, 2.5 ounces.

Cast lead cone shaped weight with a hole running through from the tip to the centre of the circular, flat base. On the base the hole is square with rounded corners. The weight has a cream patina apart from a area of recent damage, probably plough damage, to one side. Cast lead weight. The weight is rectangular in section and tapers from the base to the top. The base is flat so it can stand but it also has a piercing at the top 3.6mm in diameter. It is 37.8mm long, and the base is 20.1mm wide by 16.7mm thick and it weighs 85 grams. Such weights are hard to date precisely and could be from any date from the Roman period onwards.

Cast copper alloy object, probably a weight. The object is sub rectangular in plan with straight sides and rounded ends. In section the sides are sightly concave with a hollowed top and slightly rounded base. The top is marked by 5 parallel incised lines; they are visible only in the dipped section and the outer two are faint. It is very smooth and tactile with no breaks and a dark green patina. It is 29.2mm long, 18.4mm wide, 6.2mm thick and weighs 20.29 grams, 0.7 ounces. No parallel could be found for this object in the usual sources but it is probably Roman - Medieval in date.

Cast lead alloy weight. The weight is circular in cross section and rectangular in plan with flat ends and slightly convex sides. It is 20.8mm in diameter at the widest point, 11.4mm at the narrowest end, 38.4mm long and weighs 81 grams. There is a cicular hole 7.1mm in diameter running down the lengh. Such weights were easy to make locally and had a wide variety of uses; they are thus hard to date precisely, most are from the Roman, Medieval or Post Medieval periods. This example may have been used for fishing.
