A complete copper-alloy weight of medieval date (1200-1350). The weight is roughly conical in shape with a rounded base and flattened apex from which the suspension loop projects (rectangular in cross-section and an inverted V in shape). The inside of the loop is slightly elongated where is has been worn through suspension. Below the apex are two concentric grooves. Measurements: Length 18.6mm, Diameter 15.8mm, Weight 16.03g. Discussion: Similarly-shaped steelyard weights from the medieval period are often decorated with shields, oft that of Richard, Earl of Cornwall (Ward-Perkin…

An unidentified lead alloy object, probably a weight dating to the late medieval or early post medieval period (c.AD1400-1750. The object is a quarter of an elipsoid (Quarter of an elongated sphere) giving it a shield shaped plan. One radius is slightly longer (13.4mm) than the other (8.8mm). There is a design on the curved surface formed by a series of raised ridges. There is a central raised ridge from which four pairs of ribs radiate and connect with an outer shield motif. Weight: 4.63g, Length:13.4mm, Width:18.8mm, Height: 8.8mm. The shield motif on the object appears…

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven upper surface on which appear straight lines moulded in bold relief. The lines may represent two separate arrowhead forms or perhaps an untidy monogram including letter forms resembling M and V. On the base – or the top as cast in an open mould - there is a central dimple with a crudely incised triangle around it. Patinated. The combination of relief features, dimple and incised base recur in medieval London (e.g. Egan 1998 fig. 233 no. 993, see also no. 990) where they may respect a medieval standard (ibid. table 15), and were poss…

A lead alloy cast weight or spindle whorl, probably of early medieval to medieval date (c. AD 700 - 1200). It is possible the object is a conical spindle whorl, Walton Rogers type B, which has been pinched at one end to form a misshapen cone, alternatively it could be a conical steelyard weight which has lost the iron core and wire. The object is sub-circular at the base, with a central perforation 9 mm in diameter. The apex is pinched and the perforation closed to a slit 8 mm long. It is not clear if this is accidental damage or design. Diameter 24 mm and height 14 mm. The …

A lead alloy weight. It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub rectangular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equivalent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being s…

A probable Medieval-Post Medieval circular lead weight, c.AD 1300-1800. The object is circular and domed on one face with chamfered edges and an iron stub set on the edge. The flat surface of the object is pitted; the domed surface is relatively smooth with multiple surface scratches and indentations. The iron attachment spur is rectangular in plan and section, and is heavily rusted and corroded. The object has a powdery white patina with some red iron oxidisation on the domed face. For a similar example, see SUSS-DA9C9B.

Medieval to post medieval probable lead weight. This is a damaged object that was a roughly circular disc 27.5mm in diameter, with a central perforation with a diameter of 8mm. The disc has a flat base, the upper surface is slightly rounded and the thickness decreases from one side to the other. There is a lip 18x6mm extending from the bottom of the disc. There is a break in the disc and a portion of the disc is missing. Weight 34.25g.

A lead weight or gaming piece dating from the medieval period onwards (c.AD 1400-1800) The object is domed with a flat base, flat sides and a domed top. The base is slightly concave. It is undecorated and has a dark grey patina. Dimensions: Length 10.8mm; diameter 14.3mm; weight 13.66g The exact function and date of the object is uncertain. Weights such as these that were found outside of archaeological contexts are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Biggs and Withers (2000: 30) note that standing weights made of lead…

The weight is triangular in plan and rectangular in section (68.9mm long x 53.8mm wide at the base x 18.2mm thick) with a rectangular perforation/slot that is bigger on one side, probably the reverse (7.6mm long x 3.4mm tall) and is a narrow slit on the other, probably the face. The face is decorated with a moulded border stepped down from the flat surface of the face and defined by a deep groove along the inside edge. The weight was likely decorated with a motif on the front, but post-depositional damage and …
