A lead weight of probable medieval to post-medieval date. The object is a crude, flattened, sub-square shape with a simple raised cross on one face dividing it into four sections. The surface is heavily corroded and there is damage in places. Weights like these were made locally on small scale from the Roman period onwards and as such are difficult to date precisely when not found in a secure, dated archaeological context. The form and decoration on this example suggests a medieval to post-medieval date. Length: 67.06mm, width: 63.83mm, thickness: 18.76mm

Lead weight. Cast sub-cylindrical lead weight, with its sides flattened into five or six facets and its top and base hammered, patinated. The mass is a little over that of a fairly common 30gm value for round weights from the London waterfront with a date range of 1330-1380 ascribed to them (Egan 1998, table 15). Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1400 Diameter: 21.5mm, Thickness: 11.2mm, Weight: 31.52gms

Lead possible fishing weight. Cast object of lentoid form and plano-convex section, which has been cast in a shallow oval hollow with a smooth surface leaving a series of fine concentric lines on its convex surface. This might have been a cuttlefish bone, a material also thought to have been used to make moulds to cast small objects. This reporter has seen traces of this usage on a silver mount of late medieval date (NLM-6C1202). Cuttlefish bones might equally be used to cast fishing weights, as they would presumably be encountered by fishermen more often than by other folk. Scratched,…

Circular lead weight. X's scored into each flat side. Cracks along outer rim and on one flat side. Due to its circular shape, it could possibly be a game piece. This object is difficult to date as lead weights found common use from the Roman period to Post Medieval times.

A cast lead artefact, probably a weight of the Medieval or early Post-Medieval periods, about AD 1300- 1600. It is sub-conical in form, with a domed apex and concave sides, meaning it could be described as 'bell shaped'. The base is flat and has a small, oval depression in the centre. There are no other markings. The weight is 40.2mm high, the base has a diameter of 36.6mm which narrows to 20.8mm. It weighs 237g. This mass could represent a half pound in the mercantile system of measurement or possibly 1 mark in the English Troy system. …

A complete lead possible trade weight, probably of the Medieval or Post Medieval period (c. AD 1390-1700). The weight is in the form of the elongated face of a man with a beard and long moustache. There is a band of hair at the apex and all the facial features are prominent, except ears. The reverse of the weight is almost flat and is undecorated. The general naivety of the face suggests that it could have been locally produced. Possibly, the face depicts Jesus or possibly a local person known to the maker. A lead object, probably a weight, of unknown date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval, dating to c. AD 1200-1800. The object is sub-spherical in plan with a sub-circular central perforation. This aperture is narrower on the lower, flatter face than the upper face. Dimensions: Diameter: 17.0mm; height: 11.3mm; weight: 17.56g. It is often suggested that objects of this shape are beads or net or line weights for fishing. Small spindle whorls are also a possibility but the central perforation is probably too small on the lower face for such a purpose.
