Lead weight. A small weight made by hammering an oval droplet of solidified lead melt leaving the imprint of the hammer-blow visible on one side, and then piercing a conical hole at a projecting lug from the same side. Patinated. Presumably for use with a fishing line. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500 Length: 21.7mm, Width: 14.4mm, Thickness: 4.4mm, Weight: 7.75gms

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven upper surface on which appear straight lines moulded in bold relief. The lines may represent two separate arrowhead forms or perhaps an untidy monogram including letter forms resembling M and V. On the base – or the top as cast in an open mould - there is a central dimple with a crudely incised triangle around it. Patinated. The combination of relief features, dimple and incised base recur in medieval London (e.g. Egan 1998 fig. 233 no. 993, see also no. 990) where they may respect a medieval standard (ibid. table 15), and were poss…

Lead possible weight. Cast heater-shield-shaped plate with an indistinct symmetrical motif on its display side, possibly a lis or a crowned motif; patinated. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a pilgrim badge. The quasi-heraldic form, and perhaps the charge as well were it clearer, might both associate this with the 14th-century English vogue for heraldic motifs, which might be worn or carried by those with no noble connection or pretension. There is no apparent means of attachment. The mass equates to about one half of an averdepois ounce, thus respecting a system introdu…

Lead weight. Cast conical weight with a pinched apex with drilled hole for suspension, flat-based, patinated. A flat base would permit use as a standing weight in a scale pan. The approximate mass of this object recurs amongst lead weights of other forms from medieval London; its correspondence with the values of early medieval weights is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter, while the finder kindly suggests a Roman date and a function as a steelyard poise. The apical hole could also permit use as a line weight, also a probably medieval usage. Suggested…

Lead weight, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast rectangular plate with three bevelled edges and one cut edge, the latter being on one of the shorter sides. Five holes appear to have been pierced with the end of a handmade iron nail from the upper side where the bevel lies. The texture on the flat underside may suggest casting in a sand bed or a sanded mould, details of manufacture which might be expected in a professional episode of lead casting. Patinated. The mass might suggest this was intended to represent four [overweight] averdepois ounces and several round lead weights of a…

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with a slightly lipped rim on its upper side and a central tapered piercing of width 2.9-2mm made from the underside. Patinated. The same mass is noted for a round weight from medieval London (Egan 1998, table 15) though the form and condition might be apt to an earlier date. Suggested date: possibly Late Medieval, 1350-1400 Diameter (long axis): 29.8mm, Weight: 43.57gms

Lead weight. Cast sub-cylindrical lead weight, with its sides flattened into five or six facets and its top and base hammered, patinated. The mass is a little over that of a fairly common 30gm value for round weights from the London waterfront with a date range of 1330-1380 ascribed to them (Egan 1998, table 15). Lead possible fishing weight. Cast object of lentoid form and plano-convex section, which has been cast in a shallow oval hollow with a smooth surface leaving a series of fine concentric lines on its convex surface. This might have been a cuttlefish bone, a material also thought to have been used to make moulds to cast small objects. This reporter has seen traces of this usage on a silver mount of late medieval date (NLM-6C1202). Cuttlefish bones might equally be used to cast fishing weights, as they would presumably be encountered by fishermen more often than by other folk. Scratched,…

Lead weight. A sub-conical weight made in two distinct stages. Initially, a fragment of cast lead sheet of thickness 2.3mm was tightly rolled. The metal of this component is patinated where it appears in the rounded base. The roll was then dipped into molten lead or placed in a larger mould which was filled with eutectic metal. The jacketing layer is not markedly patinated, though patches of white fabric may represent either protrusion of the rolled core or a surface which has been lost elsewhere, the former deemed the more likely. The mass may suggest this to have represented two aver…
