A complete lead-alloy weight of medieval to Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1400 - 1800. The weight is conical with a rounded top and flat base and was likely formed by pouring molten lead into a thimble casing then allowing it to cool. The object is 20.4mm tall, 16.5mm diameter and weighs 20.5g. Although this object has been described as a weight, it may also be a gaming piece. Thimbles have been in common use in England from the 14th century onwards and Geoff Egan (2010, p.265) states that no medieval thimble indisputably dating from before the 14th century has been found in England. A complete lead weight of medieval date, c.AD 1300 - 1500. The object is circular with a thick rectangular section. A complete lead-alloy weight of uncertain, though likely medieval to Post-Medieval, date, c.AD 1300 - 1600. The weight is globular with a narrowed expanded projection to one side. This is perforated by a circular aperture for suspension. The object is undecorated. The metal has a dark grey patina and is worn. The object is 32mm long, 20.2mm in diameter and weighs 52.1g. It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. Dating such objects is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. Thei…

A solid lead shallow dome, perhaps a weight, of uncertain date, probably Medieval to post medieval, AD 1350 - 1900. There is a slight depression in the flat face where the lead has cooled after casting. The base is flat. It has a mid-grey patina. It is 31.5mm diameter, 7.8mm thick and 47.0g (1.66oz). This mass is close to 2 ounces in the English Troy system (46.6g) (Egan, 1998, page 302), or it could be a custom made weight, a weight for adding mass instead of measuring, or an ingot for convenient transport or storage of the lead. See SWYOR-399AA1 for a similar example. It could …

Lead weight. An oval droplet of congealed lead melt which has set on a flat surface, with a drilled hole of diameter 3.2mm. Presumably an improvised fishing line weight; though potentially of any post-Roman date, such objects are usually ascribed to the Medieval period by this reporter. Medieval, 1200-1500. A cast lead weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, about AD 1100-1800. The weight is of sub-conical form, and is centrally, longitudinally, pierced for suspension. The object has a height of 27.88mm, and a maximum diameter of 24.71mm. It weighs 89.85g. This mass corresponds reasonably with three ounces (3 oz.) under the Mercantile (3.08 oz) or Troy (2.88 oz) systems. However, weights were constructed for local purposes, or for uses other than measurement - for example line or net weights, while the shape of this example might indicate usage as a plumbob. A cast lead probable trade weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, about AD 1100-1800. The weight, which is very crudely cast, is of sub-triangular form, perhaps an intended shield shape, with a domed upper surface, on which there may be the remnants of decoration in moulded relief, perhaps in the form of a long, or Latin, cross within a shield. The object has a length of 44.31mm, a width of 27.61mm, and a thickness of 21.63mm. It weighs 134.04g. This mass does not closely correspond to known standardisations. However, weights were constructed for local purposes, or …
