Description: Fragment of gold sheet, probably of the Anglo-Saxon period. The bend is almost at right angles. To one side of the angle, one face is decorated; a triplet of straight grooved lines, the central one minimally wider, starts close to a finished straight edge and runs to a break. The lines are flanked on either side by a scatter of punched annulets (about 1mm in diameter), part-annulets and large dots. On the other side of the angle, the sheet is undecorated, although it has bends which may have formed a loose corrugation. It has a short length of original edge which mee…

It has two long straight edges which appear complete though show signs of damage. One side has a break midway along its length at which point the sheet is folded over. Silver object of post-medieval date. It is a cylindrical tube, with a closed undecorated base with a central scar as if a loop has been torn away. The base projects to form a rim about 2mm deep, which has an obliquely beaded edge (resembling cabling) which is now very worn. Above, the sides are of thin sheet, with the top cut into a zig-zag of eight V-shaped cut-outs and eight projecting points which are now mostly bent inwards. A crack runs from the base of one of the cut-outs to just above the base. The sides are decorated with a engraved zig-zag border just below the top edge, then …

A fragmentary silver unidentified object probably of Early Medieval date, about AD 410 - 1066. It is a rectangular strip of metal, broken at both ends, with parallel original edges. One face is decorated with a double row of irregular punched or stamped rounded dots along each original edge. Running along the centre is a guilloche pattern of repeated S shaped recesses, each one seemingly formed from a number of individual circular stamps. Together they form the impression of a rope-like two strand twist or interlace pattern. The reverse is plain. The sheet is bent at one end, befo…

A silver fragment from an unidentifed object of probable late Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1300 - 1700. The fragment is shaped like a fleur de lis. It has three trumpet shaped elements, each opening into three fluted petals. One element is vertical and the side components curve out from the central stem. Most fleur-de-lis have a transverse binding band across the base. It is missing in this example, but this may be owning to damage, as the base of the stem is a patinated break, as are the lower petals on each side fleur, suggesting the fleur element proj…

A small fragment of gold sheet was discovered. The fragment clearly is part of a larger object, but unfortunately close examination has proved unable to establish from what object the fragment came. It is impossible to establish the date of the object from which the fragment came. Analysis of the metal content of the fragment was also unable to provide further help in dating the piece. The fragment was found to contain 91% gold. Dr JD Hill Department of Prehistory and Early Europe The British Museum London

This molten droplet of heavy yellow metal was reported as possible Treasure, because it was found in the vicinity of other finds of molten gold/electrum which might be connected with the production of Iron Age gold torcs or other objects. It was sent to the British Museum for scientific analysis which demonstrated the droplet was made of copper alloy.

Description: Fragment of partly gilded silver, with ornament in a chip-carved style, made by using a range of stamps or punches. It is flat and sub-rectangular, with one straight original long edge which is smooth and rounded in cross-section. The other edges are all rougher and more right-angled in cross-section; the remaining long edge is nearly straight, and the short edges are V-shaped and nearly parallel to each other. Under magnification it can be seen that most of the other edges are cut; the only broken edge appears to be part of the angled-in short edge (the upper part on…

Uncertain object, but possibly a stirring rod, consisting of two parts, one in silver and one in copper-alloy. The copper-alloy part consists of a broken shaft topped by a dog’s head. The shaft is corkscrew-like with a groove that starts at the downturned left side of the dog’s mouth. The shaft appears to be broken since the groove is truncated at the bottom. Looking at the object from below suggests that it was hollow cast then packed out with another substance, probably lead. The head is of a young dog with upturned snout with circular indents for nostrils; further circul…

Description:  Three modern (19th century) copper alloy rectangular decorative binding strips. The strips are badly corroded and bent.  Two taper into a V shape at one end.  The third is wound around itself.  The strip edges are rounded and patterned on one side.  On the patterned side the edges are decorated by a border containing a series of uniformly punched dots.  It is not possible to ascertain if there is patterning between the borders due to the corrosion damage.   The strips have few diagnostic features making it difficult to ascribe a …

Small incomplete figure. Possibly a Pipe Tamper. Unsure if the figure is male or female as it is quite worn. There is a head, but no facial features are discernible. It appears that the figures may have had its arms outstretched and appears to be wearing a cloak/robes. But the arms are no longer attached. It appears to be standing on a plinth which then descends to appoint which is incorporated as the tamper. The objects has a brown patina, and is very worn and has no sharp edges, suggesting it has been broken and worn down over a long period of time. The object weighs 6.9g and in 40.…

A cast lead-alloy anthropomorphic mount of unknown date. The mount depicts a face wearing a rimmed cap. The face is decorated with incised linework in the style of a feathered ‘masquerade’ mask around the eyes. A single perforation in on one cheek (1.7mm diameter) may represent a teardrop.
