Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Mesolithic tranchet axehead made from a nodule of dark grey / black flint, 133mm in length. Only one face of the axehead is worked, the other remains largely covered with cortex and it appears the tool was made from a long nodule which defines the overall shape. The cross section is lenticular and the butt end is tapered and rounded. The cutting edge has several transverse removals to create a rounded tip with a wedge-shaped cross section. There is battering damage to the cutting edge, possibly from use.

It has a blunt, roughly flattened butt and sharp, rounded distal end which has some later damage on one side. It is bifacially worked with invasive, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch producing large scars. The object is translucent mottled grey and the dorsal face has light grey patination. Measurements: Length: 96mm; width: 45.4mm; thickness: 28.5mm; weight: 150.24g.

A small Mesolithic tranchet axehead made from a dark grey flint which has a heavily recorticated or patinated white surface resulting from prolonged exposure to calcareous sediments. The cross section is D shaped and asymmetrical with one curved long side refined with flaked removals and one flattened side which is less coherently worked and retains a small patch of cortex towards the rear. The shape of this flat side appears to be a response to the original form of the nodule rather than a deliberate attempt to back the blade; the cross section becomes more lenticular towards the…

A Mesolithic flint tranchet axe/adze or 'Thames pick' dating c. 9000-4000 BC. The pick is an irregular, elongated pointed oval shape in plan with a broadly lozengiform in cross section, and flake removals with minimal rippling present on all sides. One face has a deep elongated triangular removal with a V shaped cross-section. The distal end is wedge-shaped in profile with broadly convex cutting edge . The butt end is narrow and rounded with the cortex remaining on 75% of the butt which extends down one side of the tool. Other patches of…

A large and complete Mesolithic flint tranchet adze dating to circa 10000-4000 BC, 176mm in length and struck from a grey-brown flint. The tool is extensively worked on all sides with soft-hammered removals and has a lenticular cross section and a distinctively curved side profile, suggesting use as an adze. The cutting edge is rounded and symmetrical, with a wedge-shaped side profile and evidence for a tranchet removal on the dorsal face. Small patches of buff coloured cortex remain on the butt end and ventral surface.

A flint tranchet axe dating to the Mesolithic period (c.9000-4000 BC). Description: The axe is irregular rectangular in shape and sub-lozenge in cross-section.  The flatter ventral face has had much of the cortext removed and large flakes have been removed across the surface and around the edges, including the blade, which has been formed by one strike. Finer working of smaller flaking is evident around the edges of the sides. The butt is wider than the body and is again formed of large flaking. The dorsal face is bowed with widespread shal…

An incomplete flint core tranchet adze or "Thames pick" of Mesolithic date. The tool has a lenticular cross section, with removal scars on both broad faces; an area of light brown cortex is retained along the spine of the dorsal side. The cutting end has been damaged and possibly re-sharpened with no remaining evidence of a characteristic tranchet removal. Numerous small removals and damage mean that the side profile of the cutting edge is now rounded rather than wedge shaped. The butt end has broken off. The surface has been heavily re-corticated or patin…

A fragment of a worked flint core tool, struck from a blue grey flint, 60.1mm in length. The cross section is trapezoidal with removal along both long edges on one face with a strip of buff coloured cortex retained along the centre. One end tapers slightly to a damaged cutting edge with what may have been a tranchet removal scar angled into a chisel-like tip. The other end terminates in a break across the full width. The underside is flat and unworked. The flint demonstrates white recortication from deposition in calcareous sediments along with patches of post-depositional iron st…

An ovate flint core tool (tranchet axehead or pick) of suspected Mesolithic date 120mm in length, knapped from a dark grey flint with a thick white patina showing recortication from prolonged exposure to calcareous sediments. The cross section is roughly symmetrical and sub oval in shape and the butt is narrowed and flat. There are two tranchet removals at the cutting edge on one face, one of which ends in a hinge fracture. The other face has a number of smaller removals providing a curved edge. A small flint core tool, probably a tranchet axe of Mesolithic date, 82mm in length and made from a mottled pale grey flint. The pick has a sub triangular cross section, with flake removals across all sides. The distal end has a rounded wedge shaped cutting edge formed by removals on the dorsal surface and has possibly been re-worked or re-sharpened as there is no clear evidence of a tranchet removal. There are small patches of grey cortex on the dorsal surface.
