Trade tokens were issued between 1648 and 1672 at a time when there was little low denomination coinage being issued by the crown. As a result traders and business proprietors began issuing tokens as an alternate coinage with equivalent denominations of a farthing, half penny or penny. Such trade tokens rarely travel far from their place of issue and provide an insight to the trade of the time. In 1672 regal copper coinage was introduced and the trade tokens were then banned (Besly 1997, 20).3636164816724OXON2023-01-21T00:00:00Z2024-02-13T00:00:00ZOMS receipt 29552024-03-19T15:51:31Z2024-03-27T13:02:13Z1.11PAS65F9B483001EE115.51.1171421177651782443511HampshireTest ValleyRestricted AccessMonxton CPRestricted Accessbands.shops.handy8OXON-9B4BB765T [.].Armes (grocers?)Token farthingCopper alloy10627Struck or hammeredCompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderOXON-9B483E_6601945680283.jpg1269423images/edwardcaswelloxon/Certain12024-03-27T13:02:13.838Zfinds-11563101156310OXON-9AFD35TOKENMEDIEVALAn incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy biface token of Powell type 3 (segments) and a Powell type 2 (hatching).
The token would have been broadly circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section but has chips around its circumference. One surface has a worn, cast, raised design consisting of three raised lines radiating from the token's centre dividing the token into eight segements. These are not placed evenly and so divide the token into a series of irregularly sized segments. This classifies as Powell type 3. The opposite surface has a raised design possibly pseudo-script intending to be letters
The token is a dark grey colour with some off white patination.
The token is 18.9mm in diameter, 2.4mm thick and weighs 3.44 grams.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses including as weights, tickets and gaming tokens. They are believed to be locally produced for a local use, making precise dating difficult. Those with coin-like designs were previously thought to be Medieval but Post-medieval moulds for this type have also been found.
