An incomplete post medieval lead alloy syringe, probably dating to the 18th century. The syringe is formed of a cylindrical body, 10mm in diameter, with a conical tip, perforated at the end. This tip would likely have had a narrow tapering point projecting from the end which has now broken off. The rear end has a separate cap, 14mm in diameter, apparently screwed into place and which has a circular perforation in the top through which the plunger passes. The plunger is formed of a bar of 3mm diameter with a small conical terminal with a moulded collar; this terminal is likely…

Copper alloy probable syringe fragment. A tube probably constructed by the butted jointure of the opposed edges of a rectangular plate, with a flange at one end to engage another component, and nearly closed at the other save for a central hole of diameter 3.5mm. A pair of moulded ribs pass round the cylinder at its midpoint. A syringe may have been for medical use – the treatment of syphilis entailed  the irrigation of the uretha with mercury, giving rise to the proverb: ‘One night with Venus and a lifetime with Mercury’. However, in a rural context a veter…

A post medieval pewter syringe. The syringe consists of a lead barrel tube, tip, and plunger rod. At one end is a tapering conical tip which protrudes from the barrel. At the opposing end are the remains of the screw thread to which the cap would have fastened. The plunger road, which is still in place, terminates in a cylindrical knob. A ring or platform may have existed at the knob but is now lost. Based on similar examples recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme, this find can be estimated to likely be 18th century in date.

The syringe consists of several parts: the barrel is a lead alloy tube with uniform diameter (17.69mm) except at its ends. One end sports a hollow conical tip (8.84mm at its widest and 5.79mm at its narrowest, protruding 16.94mm from the barrel and with an interior diameter of 2.6mm) and the other a wider (22.6mm) cylinder that is formed by its cap, which is presumably screw-fitted to the barrel but is fused in place by corrosion that forms a line around the barrel's circumference. The plunger rod, which is a length of cylindrical (5.51mm diameter) lead alloy tipped by a wider (9.57mm…

A fragmentary copper-alloy syringe plunger of likely post-medieval date, c.1700-1899. The plunger is fragmentary but remains as a thin even shank thinning slightly past a slight collar, shortly after which it terminates in a blunt point. The top of the object is surmounted by a ring shaped head which remains only as a third of its original size as the top has snapped away. Just below the head at the top of the shank it is a thin double collar. The syringe is dark grey in collar. Measurements: 58.09mm long, 16.29mm wide, 5.37mm thick and 5.46g in weight.

An incomplete Post Medieval syringe, dating to the 18th century. All that remains is the adaptor and part of the body, which are both cylindrical and taper to the point. The object is completely undecorated. The break is on the body and completely irregular. There is some light-grey concretion on the inner and outer surfaces. There are several similar syringes on the PAS database, mainly found on the Thames foreshore. Dating evidence comes from a similar syringe found in the wreck of the Machault, which sank off eastern Canada in 1760 (Sullivan 1986, 87). Dimensions: length: 32.…

An incomplete Post Medieval lead alloy syringe, dating 17th-18th century. The object is formed of a cylinder with a domed section at one end and an open section at the other. Below the open section is a flange 4mm wide, with thread coiling around the cylinder above to form a screw joint. Attached to this would have been the cap through which the plunger passed. There is a break on the domed end where the tip of the syringe would have been, leaving a sub-circular hole. The break at the tip is not clean and the tip has been pinched so that the hole is not its original shape. Above the t…

Lead alloy possible syringe. Cast tube, open at one collared end and with a curved end with aperture of diameter 3.7mm at the other and the stub of a narrower continuation. A paired line is inscribed close to the mid point of the cylinder. Chipped recently towards its open end with a fragment detached. This is suggested to be the cylinder for a syringe for either medical or veterinary use. For the former, this may have been used to irrigate the uretha of the sufferer of a venereal disease with mercury or other palliative compounds. Closely dated examples come from the wreck of the Mar…
