A post medieval (1500-1800) leather strap fitting. The leather is dark brown and hard and appears undecorated. The object curves over so that the cut ends now meet and may have been made from two layers. The short ends of the rectangular object have three regular cuts 12.18mm deep and approx. 13.5mm apart. Each of the resulting tongues has a small hole approx.8.5mm from the end, these holes correspond at both ends. Fragment of a strap, probably from a Post-Medieval breast plate or other armour. Natasha Ferguson from the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology in Glasgow has seen a photograph of this item and says it is probably a 'strap from a piece of armour such as a breast plate which would have been worn in the civil war era'. It consists of two or three sub-rectangular strips of leather, laid on top of each other and held together by circular copper alloy rivets.
