An incomplete post medieval copper alloy mount from a sword belt, dating to c. AD 1500-1600. Possibly one of a set of three mounts, it was originally suspended from a plate as part of a sword belt hanger. The mount is foliate in outline with three lobes at each end. The central terminal of the top end is incomplete, due to an old break. It has lost its forward-facing globular ended hook which would have attached it to the main plate. The mount has cast foliate decoration on the surface and has a rivet hole near the top and the bottom of the terminals. Length: 42.0mm; width: …

A complete Late Medieval- Early Post Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, in the form of a jester's head, dating to c.AD 1400-1600. The strap fitting is cast in the form of a jester's head, moulded in high-relief. It has lentoid eyes with a sub-triangular nose and a horizontal groove representing the mouth. The head has a tight hood which forms a border around the face and has a central knop protruding over the forehead. There are two pointed, vertical ears protruding from either upper 'corners' of the head. The ears are defined by a lentoid shaped cell w…

An incomplete Post Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, perhaps a purse hanger or part of a sword belt fitting, dating to perhaps c AD 1600 - 1700. It was apparently originally broadly triangular in shape, the main plate cusped and scalloped along its edges, about one third missing to an early break. An integral long necked forward facing hook with possible zoomorphic terminal extends from the downward facing point of the triangle. It may be that the intention was to create an effect of wings, with the hook as the neck and head. The top centre part of the plate…

A complete Medieval rectangular copper alloy strap loop with a piercing for a separate internal rivet, not extant, dating to cAD 1350 - 1400. It is sub rectangular in form. The lower bar is the most truly rectangular in section and has a small circular piercing, a rivet hole, at its middle point. The two side bars have slightly chamferred edges and at the joint with the outer or upper bar there are globular knops. This outer bar is D shape in section and there is a semi-spherical boss at its middle point, the bar tapering a little away from it towards the corne…

An incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy zoomorphic strap fitting, being part of an S-shaped fastener, D shape in section, in the form of a snake, probably dating to c AD 1550 - 1800. It would have been roughly in the shape of a letter S.  What remains is one loop of the 'snake', with the simplistic form of the head given the appearance of biting the tail, so forming a loop. The fastener has a rough, mid green patina with darker patches where rubbing may have occurred. No detail of other decoration is apparent. An early break in the …

A Medieval copper alloy strap mount or strap end of a form used with three-part clasps, dating to c AD 1300 - 1450. The mount has a scutiform plate with a bar mount, semi cylindrical in section,  on the end, the whole being held together and onto the strap with two copper alloy rivets with roves, both retained here. This item was used with a matching clasp, the bar mount working with the rotating closure of the clasp to secure it. See Egan and Pritchard (2002), p116 for a discussion of how these functioned. A complete Early Medieval copper alloy openwork strap fitting probably dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The fitting is triangular in shape with a bar at the top. The design is moulded in relief. There is a knop at either end of the bar, of which the right hand knop is more pronounced than the left. From the base of each knop comes a swathe of foliage, which meets in the middle in a semi circle, below the openwork gap which is itself under the bar at the top. A complete Medieval cast copper alloy swivel strap fitting, possibly from a hunting dog lead, dating to c AD 1100 - 1300. It is a symmetrical arrangement of opposed sub D shaped suspension loops, made up of zoomorphic forms as terminals, surmounting hollow cauldron shaped domes, one slightly larger than the other. The loops have an outer edge of an offset and narrowed bar, one of which still has the remains of a roller in situ. The bases of the domes butt each other, with presumably an integrally cast pin passing from one dome and …

A complete probably Iron Age copper alloy strap union, dating to c 100BC - AD100. The strap union is formed by two joined but addorsed curved central features with expanded, trumpet-like terminals that meet at their inner tips, so that they close and form a figure of eight, enclosing two small holes. The whole is bounded down each side by a narrow and rounded strap bar with pillow shaped expansions at the junction of bar and the centrepiece. The reverse is flat. The  object appears to have been conserved in some way and now has a glossy grey patina.  …

The other has a ragged edge, is slightly longer, and has a darker patina. They are joined by a single rivet close to the centre of one end. Possible textile fragments are held between the two.
