Copper alloy belt hook probably from a sword belt. This is a U-shaped bar the bottom of which is expanded to form a pennanular loop. One of the arms terminates in a large rectangular loop, whilst the other slightly longer arm ends with a short inwards projecting angled bar, this arm is decorated in a zoomorphic head with a line of upwardly pointing recessed chevrons running up the arm and a recessed line running the length of the bar to emulate a mouth. This artefact dates to the 15th-16th century, M J Cuddeford in Identifying Metallic Small Finds (p. 38, No. 55).

Copper alloy possible strap fitting. Cast triangular frame with a round knop at one angle and with slightly larger D-shaped knops at the other two. There is no evidence for a pin seat or pin rest, so this was probably not a buckle frame. As a strap union, the form would permit three light straps to converge upon it. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Height: 19.7mm, Width: 21.9mm, Thickness (at knops): 2.8mm, Weight: 1.84gms

Copper-alloy openwork fitting from a spatha sword-belt or harness pendant of Roman date (c. 100 - 200 AD). The object is flat and broadly triangular in shape, with corners that curl around and back on themselves and a point that extends and terminates in a collared, tri-lobed knop. The edges of the object are slightly bevelled. The central part of the triangular is made-up of an openwork design of a D-shaped loop, two parallel oval loops and a heart-shaped loop (from top to bottom). A section of the object has broken from the top, leaving an abraded broken edge. This probably originall…

Copper-alloy fragment of a hooked strap fitting from a sword or baldric belt of post-medieval date (c. 1500 - 1700 AD). The fragment is from the upper section of the object, comprising a circular convex plate that tapers slightly at one end and extends in a circular projection for a rivet at the other end. A hook is missing from the bottom section; the broken edge is worn, suggesting an ancient break. Also missing is the separate copper-alloy sheet that would have been attached to the underside of the object. The fragment is dark brown in colour with patches of green copper corrosion. …

Copper alloy possible strap fitting fragment. A cast D-section oval loop, wider at one end and diminishing in its width from 9.7mm to 6.4mm towards its other end, where it is broken. A complete object incorporating a loop of this form was recently recorded from Burton upon Stather, North Lincolnshire (NLM-844D5E), and featured a smaller sub-rectangular loop at right angles to the larger loop of graduated width. In its appearance this resembled a miniature stirrup, though serving a different function, albeit perhaps still associated with horse-gear. A carbine sling might require such a …
