A complete post-Medieval to Modern copper alloy 'S'-shaped zoomorphic 'snake belt' fastener or belt hook (c. 1550 -c.1950). The fastener has two snake or swan head terminals with necks that curve to form hooks. Each head has a finely moulded. The necks narrow below the heads before expanding again towards the centre of the body of the animal. At the centre is a raised band flanked by a ring of six leaves on each side. A freely moving copper-alloy annular ring has a diameter of 12.0mm and is circular in cross-section. The object reddish brown. S-shaped 'snake belt' fasteners were pro…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, probably dating to c. AD 1500-1700. The strap fitting consists of a sub-rectangular plate of copper alloy, with an indented attachment end creating two lobes on this edge. The plate tapers slightly down its length to the other end, from which projects a rearward facing hook. This is deliniated by a slightly flanged transverse collar, with an incised groove dividing the collar from the plate. The fitting is undecorated, and has two rivet holes on the longitudinal median line, the upper retaining an iron rivet. Dimensions: Length 36.1mm; widt…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, probably dating to c. 1500-1650. The mount consists of of an abraded sub-rectangular plate with a narrowed waist towards its base; the plate would probably originally been trilobed on its top edge. The front of the plate is decorated with a deeply engraved foliate motif, or 'vine-scroll' decoration, the reverse is plain. From the reverse project a pair of integral rectangular-sectioned prongs which have been bent at around 90 degrees to meet in the middle, forming a sub-rectangular loop. A Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The mount comprises of a rectangular strip of copper alloy, folded by approximately 45 degrees along one of its long edges, with this respected by the incised decoration. The mount features a roughtly central crudely cut rectangualr perforation, flanked on either end by a circular drilled rivet hole; neither rivet survives. A pair of incised lines along either edge of the broader facet of the fitting define a central rectangular field containing four sets of obliquely angled lines, in groups of 3 and 4. Simil…

One element of a two-part, cast copper-alloy swivel, of medieval date, about AD 1100 to 1500. It consists of a D-sectioned ring of metal with an oval extension at one end, reminiscent of a pierced bezel to take a bolt which would connect it to the other, similar element. The rivet and the second element are missing. The extension is decorated with a series of diagonal grooves. It is 14mm long, 13mm wide and 8mm in thickness at the bezel. Compare Griffiths, Philpott and Egan (2007, Meols: The Archaeology of the North Wirral Coast) pl. 35, Nos. 2324/5 for a complete example of slightly d…

An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy hooked strap fitting for a sword-belt (c. 1600-c. 1700). The main body of the fitting is sub-circular in plan, convex at the front and concave at the rear. The front of the main body has three vertical facets. At one end there is a horizontal ridge where there is a break. Here, there would have been a rounded knop, pierced for a separate rivet. The rearwards projecting hook is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. There is an integral rivet on the rear face situated on the lower part of the main body. The fitting has small areas of c…

A complete copper alloy strap fitting of probable Medieval date (c. AD 1300-1500). The object is composed of a single rectangular strip of copper alloy that folds over on itself with the two ends meeting. This creates a loop at one end and there is a single rivet to hold the folded metal in place at the opposite end. Suspended from the loop is a plain circular copper alloy ring with a diameter of 9.3mm. Similar examples can be seen in Griffiths et al (2007: 126) plate 21 nos 1239-1241. The overall dimensions are as follows: 15.67mm in length, 9.3mm in width, 3.38mm in thickness and 0…

Medieval (c.1350-1400) strap fitting; bar mount with pendant loop. The copper alloy bar mount is rectangular sheet which lower third is folded to the reverse. There is a copper alloy rivet holding the two plates together. The corners of the fold are removed so it is narrowed. From the fold the D-shaped pendant is suspended. The surfaces of the bar and pendant have a mid grey-green patina. It measures 15.59mm in length, 9.45mm wide and weighs 0.55g. An incomplete medieval copper-alloy bar mount (strap-fitting). The strap fitting consists of a sub-rectangular sheet of copper alloy, tapering into a narrow strip at the bottom, which curves backwards to form a hook, but has seemingly lost its terminal through which a rivet would have travelled for attachment. The bar is flat and is perforated with two rivet holes, one at each narrow end. The hook appears to have been twisted slightly. On the front of the fitting the long edges are very slightly recessed and decorated with finely incised wrigglework. The reverse is smooth and flat wi…
