Lead slingshot, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast oval pellet of rounded section, patinated overall. The form is comparable to, if not so acutely pointed as, Republican Roman and later Roman slingshot, which also appeared in 4th-century contexts at Vindolanda fort on Hadrian’s Wall. It is certainly of a mass to constitute an effective projectile weapon. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410

A complete cast lead sling shot of Roman date, probably dating from the first century AD.
The artefact is biconical, tapering to a sharp point at one end and a more rounded point at the other. The surfaces are convex. An assemblage of over 100 lead Roman sling-shots, found at the same farm as BH-BF5521 (a short distance to the south-east of the Roman town of Verulamium), is discussed by Greep (1987, pp. 183-200), who suggests a mid-first-century date, based on associated early military equipment (ibid, p. 184). Such objects have been found at sites throughout Roman Britain and 3…

Lead possible slingshot. Cast oval round-ended pear-shaped shot. A deep diagonal groove and an adjacent mark resembling an uneven saltire might be either deliberate markings or fortuitous surface damage; the latter probably more likely, as is the case with other small gouges. Patinated. The lead slingshot was the mark of a professional user; the Mediterranean islanders of the Balearics and Rhodes were especially noted as mercenary slingers, while the use of the sling in Britain is also attested. Lead slingshot seems to be associated with Roman military activity up to the end of the se…
