Five fragments of bloomery slag that appear to have been produced from the tapping process. All display smooth molten ridges and channels on the face characteristic of runs of solidified molten taped slag. Where broken the core is seen to be dense but filled with abundant, small bubbles and cavities. These fragments measure 1, 35mm by 33mm 2, 50mm by 35mm 3, 70mm by 50mm 4, 42mm by 30mm 5, 115mm, by 80mm

A piece of cast lead alloy slag of unclear date, 11th-18th century AD. This object is a piece of slag, formed when molten lead fell during the casting process onto a firmer surface. The metal dripped down on one side and the main body of the item has formed from several drops landing on top of each other. Lead was a common metal throughout the Medieval and early Post Medieval period and was used for many items, from tokens and gaming pieces to seal matrices, pilgrim badges, and other religious items. This piece of slag was most likely lost during the casting process; lead is eas…

Possible piece of tin alloy slag of Post Medieval date, 1500-1900. This piece is a concave fragment of tin alloy metal with multiple inclusions and casting flaws visible in the broken sides. The irregular material and shape suggest this was a piece of slag dropped during casting.

In cross-section it is D shaped. Measurements are; length 1694mm, width 1035mm, thickness 453mm. Tap-slag is slag that is 'tapped' from a bloomery furnace. An assemblege of eight pieces of slag. Seven of these pieces are undiagnostic slag (metal working waste). See Historic England: Archaeometallurgy, Guidelines for Best Practice 2015, p.23. Pieces A, F & G (see image) have a strong magnetic reaction and will jump off of a table top to attach to a strong magnet held near-by. Pieces C & E have a weaker magnetic reaction, moving slightly if a strong magnet is held near-by but not moving to attach themselves to the magnet. All of the above have a mid to dark grey colour, dull and roughened texture. Pieces B & D (see image) …

Three irregular fragments of copper metal working waste (slag) or fuel ash, of probable Roman to Post Medieval dating (c. AD 43 to AD 1800). The largest fragment is quite heavy, though the two smaller fragments are slightly lighter and appear to have the remains of silver in their mix. The process of working ore to produce copper or iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period. In addition these objects having been recovered from land producing objects ranging from the Roman through to the Post Medieval period, therefore these pieces of slag could date from…
