A large fragment of Iron bloomery slag. The fragment is rich in iron with iron corrosion products over parts of its surfaces. It strongly attracts a magnet. The fragment also contains a large number of air bubbles and is heavy for its size. One side has a distinct, smooth curved profile which may be where the bloom was shaped by the inner wall of the furnace. The process of smelting iron ore to produce iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period.

Two pieces of glass slag of probable late post medieval or modern date 1700 - 1850. The larger fragment is a mid green colour with white inclusions. In section a clear irregular circular pattern can be seen where the waste product has been removed by stirring the molten mixture. The fragment measures 69.4mm length, 58.0mm width 48.4mm thick and weighs 307.54 grams The smaller fragment is a mid grey black colour with cream stone like inclusions It measures 37.8mm length, 29.1mm width17.6mm thick and weighs 18.0 grams

Piece of waste material from a high temperature refractory furnace. The piece is silica which has poured from the furnace at a very high temperature. The surface has cooled rapidly into a glass like material while the inner has cooled more slowly to a opaque white material, thought to be high in silica. The surface material is opaque olive green. It weighs 60 grams. John Allen has examined this piece and suggested it may be a refractory or ball clay in the centre. While pottery wasters have been found from the site this is evidence of a much higher temperature and modern industry an…

Three pieces of metalworking slag; waste material from metal working. It reacts slightly to a magnet. Most of the surfaces are rough, blistered and black with some orange throughout. A portion of the large piece is dark grey and slightly "blobby" where the liquid material has solidified in drops and layers. Parts of this billowed material have a dull shine. Together, the pieces weigh 61.84 grams.

A piece of metalworking slag of unknown date. Light-weight, magnetised and slightly convex piece of slag, possibly part of a crucible, or maybe cinder slag. The material is pale grey in the centre; one surface is blackened and the other surface is dark brown in colour; it has a rough and pitted surface, glossy in places, with a purple sheen. Compare NSC Box 008 and NSC Box 032C in the National Slag Collection. Slag is very difficult to date but it is important as evidence of metalworking. This is likely to be Post Medieval to Modern in date. Length: 38.1mm; Width: 50.6mm; Thickness:…

A piece of tap slag of uncertain date from Roman to Post Medieval. It is dense, magnetic and black to purple in colour. It forms a thick plate which is rough and irregular on the lower face, with characteristic runs of solidified molten metal across the top face. This piece is just one small example of the many pieces recovered from the same place. Tap-slag is slag that is 'tapped' from a bloomery furnace. This is carried out during smelting so as to allow the long continuance of the operation. It cools to a solid slag with marked flow lines. There were fewer bloomeries after the…
