An amorphous piece of copper working slag, smooth yet curved on one side so possibly dripped (or scraped) from a crucible. Without contextual information it is impossible to date copper slag however noting its presence is important as it may indicate metal working.

An assemblage of seven fragments of industrial waste including two fragments of burnt limestone and five pieces of ironworking slag. Metal working waste is difficult to date and could be Bronze Age through to post medieval date, although this assemblage is most likely to be post medieval in date (c.1700 - 1900 AD). The pieces range in size and weight with the heaviest fragment weighing 71.5 grams and the lightest fragment weighing 7 grams. The variety of waste suggests the assemblage represents the different types of slag to be recovered from an iron working furnace, with heavier piec…

Three pieces of slag, clinker or other similar industrial by-product. The pieces are rough and irregular, with bubbles and cavities, and have a low density. Two are a grey green colour with obvious metallic particles. The other is orange, even less dense, and some patches of metal deposit. All three react faintly to a magnet.

Two pieces of slag, clinker or other similar industrial by-product. The pieces are rough and irregular, with bubbles and cavities. One has a low density and is grey with some undulating dark grey layers and some areas of orange colouration. The other is low in mass but glassy with conchoidal fractures. There is a lump of orange stone on one face, and a shiny, purple layer on the other face, with the rets being a dark grye to black colour. Both react to a magnet.

Three irregular fragments of iron bloomery waste (slag) or fuel ash, of Iron Age to Late Medieval dating (800 BC to AD 1600).
All three fragments are light for their size, which would suggest that minimal iron metal is present within the matrix. All have a honeycomb structure, formed of solidified air bubbles.
The measurements are as follows:
1: Length: 24.53 mm. Width: 23.04 mm. Thickness: 15.25 mm. Weight: 3.8 g.
2: Length: 50.57 mm. Width; 31.64 mm. Thickness: 21.75 mm. Weight: 10.1 g.
3: Length: 31.00 mm. Width: 25.66 mm. Thickness: 19.56 mm. Weight: 11.7 g.

Small fragment of iron slag of unknown date. The associated material (being both Roman and also Post Medieval date) suggest that the context of this find is from is either mixed or has a post medieval intrusion; therefore a wide Roman - Post Medieval date is attributed to this find (50-1800 AD). The slag is slightly magnetic and has an orange coloured corrosion product associated. Where it is broken a honeycomb like internal matrix / structure is revealed.
The fragment measures 22mm length, is 11.4mm width, 13.2mm thick and weighs 3.41 grams.

Two pieces of glass slag of probable late post medieval or modern date 1700 - 1850.
The larger fragment is a mid green colour with white inclusions. In section a clear irregular circular pattern can be seen where the waste product has been removed by stirring the molten mixture. The fragment measures 69.4mm length, 58.0mm width 48.4mm thick and weighs 307.54 grams
The smaller fragment is a mid grey black colour with cream stone like inclusions It measures 37.8mm length, 29.1mm width17.6mm thick and weighs 18.0 grams

A fragment of Iron bloomery slag. The fragment measures 43.74mm long by 37.66mm wide by 22.40mm thick. It weighs 23.0g. It consists mainly of highly fired or vitrified clay, with a small amount of iron rich slag bonded to the surface. The Iron rich slag exhibits air bubbles and has a smooth, almost glass like surface. The process of smelting iron ore to produce iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period.
