Eleven (11) irregular fragments of iron and copper metal working waste (slag) or fuel ash, of Iron Age to Late Medieval dating (800 BC to AD 1600). All three fragments are light for their size, which would suggest that minimal metal is present within the matrix. All have a honeycomb structure, formed of solidified air bubbles. All together the fragments weigh 80.0 g. The process of working ore to produce copper or iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period, so these pieces of slag could date from any time between the Iron Age (80…

The largest fragment is quite heavy, though the two smaller fragments are slightly lighter and appear to have the remains of silver in their mix. The process of working ore to produce copper or iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period. In addition these objects having been recovered from land producing objects ranging from the Roman through to the Post Medieval period, therefore these pieces of slag could date from…

Copper alloy tap slag measuring 66.10mm long, 36.19mm wide, 11.85mm thick and weighing 62.1g. The slag is very long and thin with rounded edges and evidence of air holes. One side is very flat and more smooth than the other, suggesting that the molten copper alloy was poured onto a flat surface where it then cooled.
