Three irregular fragments of copper metal working waste (slag) or fuel ash, of probable Roman to Post Medieval dating (c. AD 43 to AD 1800). The largest fragment is quite heavy, though the two smaller fragments are slightly lighter and appear to have the remains of silver in their mix. The process of working ore to produce copper or iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period. In addition these objects having been recovered from land producing objects ranging from the Roman through to the Post Medieval period, therefore these pieces of slag could date from…

Three irregular fragments of copper metal working waste (slag) or fuel ash, of probable Iron Age to Late Medieval dating (c. 800 BC to AD 1600). The largest fragment is quite heavy, though the two smaller fragments are relatively light suggesting that minimal metal is present within the matrix.  The process of working ore to produce copper or iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period. Eleven (11) irregular fragments of iron and copper metal working waste (slag) or fuel ash, of Iron Age to Late Medieval dating (800 BC to AD 1600). All three fragments are light for their size, which would suggest that minimal metal is present within the matrix. All have a honeycomb structure, formed of solidified air bubbles. All together the fragments weigh 80.0 g. The process of working ore to produce copper or iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period, so these pieces of slag could date from any time between the Iron Age (80…

A piece of what appears to be copper alloy slag. It has a high metal content and is very heavy for slag but seems too irregular for a finished piece. There are small bubbles in the piece and a rounded hollow seems to be the result of a large bubble. There is a loop at one end and a shaped tail at the other.

Very irregular shaped lump of copper alloy metal-working residue. Very dense, very rough granular surface. Appears to be something that was soft rather than fluid when its shape was formed. Much of the surface is covered in a light green powdery oxidisation layer, but there are flecks of bright silver colour showing where high points have been scraped suggesting some silver content. Under magnification the surface is quite porous with frequent pitting visible. Appears to be the by-product of metal working in the area.

Two irregular shaped lumps of copper alloy metal working slag. Frequent small pits are visible in the surface of both lumps but are most prominent on one side of each. The other side of each lump has globular protrusions and occasional larger less defined pits. There is a coating of light green powdery oxidisation (verdigris) over much of the surface of both sides with patches of bright copper coloured metal showing.
