A piece of metalworking slag of unknown date. Light-weight, magnetised and slightly convex piece of slag, possibly part of a crucible, or maybe cinder slag. The material is pale grey in the centre; one surface is blackened and the other surface is dark brown in colour; it has a rough and pitted surface, glossy in places, with a purple sheen. Compare NSC Box 008 and NSC Box 032C in the National Slag Collection. Slag is very difficult to date but it is important as evidence of metalworking. This is likely to be Post Medieval to Modern in date. Length: 38.1mm; Width: 50.6mm; Thickness:…

A piece of tap slag of uncertain date from Roman to Post Medieval. It is dense, magnetic and black to purple in colour. It forms a thick plate which is rough and irregular on the lower face, with characteristic runs of solidified molten metal across the top face. This piece is just one small example of the many pieces recovered from the same place. Tap-slag is slag that is 'tapped' from a bloomery furnace. This is carried out during smelting so as to allow the long continuance of the operation. It cools to a solid slag with marked flow lines. There were fewer bloomeries after the…
