Two pieces of slag, clinker or other similar industrial by-product. The pieces are rough and irregular, with bubbles and cavities. One has a low density and is grey with some undulating dark grey layers and some areas of orange colouration. The other is low in mass but glassy with conchoidal fractures. There is a lump of orange stone on one face, and a shiny, purple layer on the other face, with the rets being a dark grye to black colour. Both react to a magnet.

A piece of tap slag of uncertain date from Roman to Post Medieval. It is dense, magnetic and black to purple in colour. It forms a thick plate which is rough and irregular on the lower face, with characteristic runs of solidified molten metal across the top face. This piece is just one small example of the many pieces recovered from the same place. Tap-slag is slag that is 'tapped' from a bloomery furnace. It has a dull stone like surface, but has been cut in half since recovery to reveal the internal structure which is closely packed bubbles, varying in size in a dark grey glassy material.
