A possible maul or hammerstone of unknown date. The object is a dark grey almost black flint speckled with mid grey throughout the flint. Approximately 30% of the object is covered with a white/pale grey cortex. The shape is roughly an elongated oval, but with some evidence of a "waist." In section the stone is roughly triangular. A large stone implement of uncertain date and function, perhaps a maul. The artefact is a broadly sub-rectangular wedge of fine grained late Silurian or Devonian sandstone rock local to the area in which it was found (pers com Daniel Lockett). Approximately 1/3 along the length is a distinct band or groove which has been pecked forming a shallow depression. The implement is fashioned on a large pebble with a natural elongated ellipsoid shape. A shallow groove has been pecked around the circumference of the pebble at approximately its middle point, which coincides with its centre of gravity. The pebble is a fine grained homogeneous textured sandstone showing a fine laminated bedding which adds to its visual attraction.
