A large stone implement of uncertain date and function, perhaps a maul. The artefact is a broadly sub-rectangular wedge of fine grained late Silurian or Devonian sandstone rock local to the area in which it was found (pers com Daniel Lockett). Approximately 1/3 along the length is a distinct band or groove which has been pecked forming a shallow depression. All of the other surfaces are not worked and are a mid purple brown colour with a well formed surface patina. The purpose of this groove is unclear; it maybe functional aiding the securing of rope / binding; however there are no im…

The implement is fashioned on a large pebble with a natural elongated ellipsoid shape. A shallow groove has been pecked around the circumference of the pebble at approximately its middle point, which coincides with its centre of gravity. The pebble is a fine grained homogeneous textured sandstone showing a fine laminated bedding which adds to its visual attraction. The groove has been fashioned by gently pecking the surface to form a shallow U shaped groove approximately 2mm. deep and varying in width from 2.6cm. in the broadest part to 2.1cm at its narrowest. The groove would con…
