A fragment of the copper alloy matchlock, probably dating to AD c.1600-c.1750. This plate is probably part of the firing mechanism possibly the serpentine. It would be one of a pair. It is engraved to appear like a birds head and is probably for a commissioned rather than a mass produced matchlock possibly for hunting in terms of fowling. It is unusual in that it is copper rather than iron but sometimes brass is used on expensive' sporting guns, but usually rather later in the 18th rather than 17th century, and often continental (German usually) in origin.
