Lead possible lure. Thin cast cigar-shaped object with a continuing spirally engraved groove extending from one end to the other. A small [diameter 1.3mm] hole also appears at one end. Lightly patinated. Though the groove might suggest incorporation into a screw mechanism, a soft material like lead would seem unsuitable for such a usage, and the groove is not damaged by wear. The small hole at one end could suggest the loss of a separate loop, which might point to a function as a fishing weight or lure. Such provision for attachment is typical of modern fishing weights used by sea ang…

Lead lure. Cast weight in the form of a fish, retaining the stubs of tail and dorsal fin. Dense patches of ferrous corrosion at the head and tail mark the position of steel loops to attach the lure to a fishing line, and for a hook. For this, a spinning motion would probably be more effective than the piscine form, which was primarily intended to persuade a fisherman to buy it. The surface is unpatinated, suggesting a relatively recent date. This reporter has also …

Lead and iron fishing lure. Plano-convex casting representing a beetle with eyes, wing case and abdomen modelled, and with the bent stub of an iron hook or pin embedded in its flat underside on the centre line, a little towards the tail. The form of the object enabled it to spin as it was drawn through water, and the low relief detail on the convex face was intended to set up vibrations to entice fish such as salmon or pike - its 'realistic' appearance would be of more significance to the fisherman than to his prey. If successful, the object would function as a gorge, to stick crosswa…
