Copper alloy handle. A cast and tapered round-section handle with deep grooves ascending as a right hand spiral up to a collared terminal knop. These may combine decorative effect with the provision of a secure grip. The handle springs from a basal collar, and a pair of round lugs of diameter 11.2mm beneath this clasps a matching lug which retains the rough broken stub of a protruding element on one side. The mating of the clasping lugs is very snug. The handle presumably served to adjust machinery. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1775-1875 Length: 97.0mm, Diameter: 17.3mm, Weight: …

Post-Medieval lever. Cast round section rod, slightly tapered from a rounded end with a waisted knop, and with two separate groups of four incised grooves; each group comprising two deeper and wider grooves flanked by two narrower and shallower and possibly billeted grooves. It bears a drilled hole of diameter 8.6mm, which is on both sides surrounded by a circular worn patch of diameter 13mm. These features suggest the engagement of the …

Large, heavy cast cu-alloy object, probably a Roman lever, dating from c. AD43-410. The object is hollow cast and of roughly long cylindrical shape which tapers outwards from top to bottom. It is enclosed at both ends and has a square protuberance on the top. There are two parallel oblong perforations cut out of the body of the cylinder, close to the top. Linear decoration is visible close to- and on the bottom end itself. This end has been damaged in antiquity. The artefact looks complete and it seems to have been a heavy-duty object rather than decorative. It is possible that it is …
