Copper alloy and iron possible leash swivel. A cast D-shaped and probably D-section loop with a flat circular panel through which passes the corroded shank of a ferrous metal spindle or pin. Copper alloy leash swivel, as kindly identified by the finder, who cites Read, Metal Artefacts of Antiquity nos 650-653; this object also recorded as UKDFD no. 57300. An oval loop with moulded lower sides springs from an oval boss with a projecting integrally cast rivet or shank of length 6mm and diameter 4mm. The small size would seem to make this more suitable for use as a hawking accessory rather than as a dog leash. Suggested date: Medieval, 1050-1250. Height: 22.4mm, Width: 18.5mm, Thickness (at boss): 8.7mm, Weight: 4.03gms

Iron possible leash swivel. Wrought iron ring with an expanded part of its circumference bearing a drilled hole of diameter 7.6mm. The delamination of the metal has resulted in misleadingly angular sections, and the original surface of the object has probably been lost. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700 Diameter: 33.8mm, Width (at holed part): 12.5mm, Band Thickness (as found): 3.3mm, Weight: 6.50gms

Part of a swivel for a dog leash. It is a copper alloy, D-shaped loop, oval in section, with a flatter face on one side. In the 'flat' is a cast in loop at 90 degrees to the larger loop, through which would have been mounted a swivel to facilitate movement of the lead. The dates attributed to these finds, such as NMS-691C22, SUR-36FF7D and HAMP-084697 are wide, 1100-1600 seems to be the core period of their use Dimension: Length 43mm, width 35mmmm Weight 3.82g

Small medieval copper-alloy swivel. It consists of a smaller circular loop with a projecting integral collared shank or rivet which passes through a hole in the expanded base of a larger sub-circular loop and holds it in place with a conical head. Both loops are circular in cross-section. The collar on the shank is also circular in cross-section. It expands in diameter from the small loop toward the large loop and the trajectory of expansion continues onto the base of the large loop. On one side of the base there is a seam, or closed gap, parallel with the shank. The two parts now…

A complete copper alloy Medieval to early post-medieval two piece swivel possibly for a leash possibly dated to 1100-1600 AD. The frame joins at the base around a cylinder and extends slightly beyond it at either side.

Copper alloy and iron possible leash swivel. Cast round section copper alloy ring with a collared spherical terminal threaded on to it via a drilled hole. The terminal retains a corroded ferrous metal shank. In this configuration, and with the iron part serving as pin, the object might alternatively have served as a light buckle or strap fitting. Socket half of a medieval ball-and-socket swivel from a leash, with moulded stylized animal heads and geometric incised decoration. It consists of a socket and an integral loop. The socket is barrel-shaped externally (slightly larger diameter at the centre, tapering convexly towards the ends) and ball-shaped internally. The loop is oval and its longer axis is perpendicular to the socket. It is bi-convex in cross-section. A pair of animal heads project outward (in opposite directions) from each end of the loop. They have oval pellet eyes, a pointed chin and a bi-convex jaw. Set a little…
