A piece of the partly vitrified kiln muffle from a clay pipe kiln.  This was a permanent chamber constructed within the kiln structure that held the pipes during firing.  It is typically made of previously fired pipe stems that were used like the sticks in wattle and daub to support the walls during construction.  The walls are typically composed of tempered pipe clay and the interior surface was repeatedly smeared with white clay in between firings to seal any cracks and prevent flue gasses from entering and discolouring the pipes.  Muffle kilns were used for firin…

A group of seven fragments of ‘stem slag laminate’ waste from a clay pipe kiln (Peacey 1996, 93-94 and 168-171). The largest fragment measures 126.8mm in length and 249.68g in weight. This type of material was used to create a temporary cover to seal the pipes in a muffle kiln during firing.  It is characterised by a layer of previously fired pipe stems which was used to support a coating that was typically made of clay, ash and horse dung.  This coating fused to form the slaggy layer during firing and protected the contents of the muffle from becoming …

A fragment from a Post Medieval clay pipe kiln wall, made from cemented rows of waste clay pipe stems dating from AD 1650-1900. The fragment contains at five layers of stacked clay pipe, which are stacked horizontally. The pipe stems are held in place with a grey cement. On one face, which would have been the internal face of the kiln the cement has vitrified, which has created a layer of purple-brown glassy glaze. Dimensions: length: 81.75mm; width: 76.22 mm; thickness: 71.30mm; weight: 355g Another pipe kiln fragment on the database is LON-EE7834.

Molten material, probably Roman kiln waste. It produced no response when tested with a metal detector on zero discrimination. It has a feel similar to high fired ceramic and maybe from an unrecorded Romano British pottery kiln serving nearby Wroxeter. The fort is a short distance away on the other side of the Severn. Measures 45mm in length, 39mm in width,16mm in thickness and weighs 22.5g.

Seven pieces of fired clay of irregular shape, probably broken. They are probably material from a kiln or hearth; the lining or base. The pieces have different colour and textures. Four are grey with areas of dark orange, one is a yellow brown colour, one is red and orange and swirled, and the last is yellow with some vitrification and crazed cracking on a flat face. They are all hard and show evidence of high heat. Compare to SWYOR-8C7620, SWYOR-586715, SWYOR-63CA13 and SWYOR-A52B85. Irregular sub-rectangular fragment of kiln waste / kiln furniture. The fragment is heavily fired although now much abraded with many irregular small circular or sub-circular holes (diameter 1.4mm). The fabric is a mid - light grey colour; it is mica rich with rose coloured quartz inclusions. There is not a broken edge to examine the fabric in detail. A direct parallel is not available but the findspot – along with fragments of medieval vessels may suggest a medieval date. Intriguingly it may also hint at pottery production nearby The sherd measures 46.7mm length, 35.1mm width is 1…

Fragment of kiln/furnace lining; coarse orange earthenware with numerous cream inclusions & streaks; the inner surface is vitrified dark metallic brown for a thickness of up to 5mm. The outer surface is missing, the surviving maximum thickness of the wall is 22mm. Weight 23.37g. 2. Block of roughly square sectioned fine dark-grey lamiated stone, probably slate. Three wheel thrown coarseware sherds (average thickness: 11-12mm; collective weight: 115.61g) with ridges or scar marks on the lesser glazed side indicating that other vessels were placed on top of or stuck to these vessels during the firing process. The glaze is dark brown - black with the inner fabric ranging from brown - grey to pink, with large gritty inclusions throughout. These sherds could be known as 'saggars' and are hard-fired crude and cylindrical vessels that were used to hold more delicate materials, or alternatively pancheons which are low large dished vessels. A small wheel thrown possible foot ring base and side sherd of Blackware (49.7mm x 43.1mm; thickness: 3.6mm; weight: 14.81g). There is glaze on both sides of the vessel, as well as blistering at one end, with one hole running straight through the fabric, indicating firing at high temperatures. The fabric is rather hard and reddish-grey in colour and has been glazed inside and out with the lead glaze probably drawing iron from the body. These vessels would have probably been fired inside a pancheon or harder vessel in order to withstand the high temperatures. This vessel dates from …

A highly vitrified and over-fired base and side Black Ware sherd (44mm x 57.1mm x 28.1mm; thickness: 11.5mm; weight: 39.97g). By firing to such a high temperature, the clay seems to have melted with the surface blistering, and the vessel has effctively become a stoneware. The sherd is most likely to be a fragment of kiln waste, dating to the late 16th - early 18th century. Black wares are essentially a soft to hard-fired thrown earthenware, and in this case, has a grey fabric colour. The lead glaze probably draws iron from the body, which gives the dark colour. Black wares are typical…
