A rim sherd from an earlier Roman wheel made vessel of Severnake-type greyware, probably a bead-rim jar. It is characteristically grog tempered (with inclusions up to c. 1.9mm) and light-grey in colour. It has a bead rim and curved body in profile. The curvature of the sherd in plan suggests a circumference of c. 200mm at the rim.

Object type: JAR
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Sixty-two Medieval earthenware sherds of a pinky-buff gritty fabric, from a rounded jar with a very slight basal angle, diameter probably in excess of 300mm. The jar would have had two looped handles springing from the rim; there are three small fragments of one of these handles present. The sherds collectively weigh 460.56g. Found with WILT-65AEB1, WILT-65C544 and WILT-65D891, the group as a whole is likely to date from the 12th century, with the outside date range of the late 11th to very early 13th century.
