A fragment of decorative border from a Post Medieval redware storage jar. The sherd consists of part of the decorative border and a small portion of the internal body of the vessel. The decorative border was a separate piece of clay that was inserted between the rim and shoulder of the vessel and decorated with a pattern of semi-circular lines. The rim of the vessel has broken away, leaving the border and the body clay that it was attached to. The internal face of the sherd is glazed with a green/brown glaze. The sherd is fully oxidised. It is 43.22mm wide, 31.57mm high and 26.44mm…

A worn rim fragment from a Post Medieval redware storage jar. The sherd consists of part of the rim, decorative border below and a small amount of the body. The decorative border appears to have been made of a second piece of clay that was inserted into the gap between rim and body, and decorated with a pattern of semi-circular lines. Unlike KENT-8AF944, this example has been well sealed against the rest of the vessel, and the only visible evidence of the join is in the break. The vessel has a greenish brown glaze along the top of the rim and on the internal face. The external face ha…

Unlike other examples (LON-88BD66 and LON-FC76D3) this border clay is very poorly sealed against the rest of the sherd, and as such there is a gap between the rim and the top of the border. The vessel has a dark brown glaze along the top of the rim and o…

Postmedieval pottery sherd. The sherd is part of a storage jar dating from the 16th - 17th century AD (1500's to 1600's AD). The sherd is from the rim of the jar, which has a thumbed strip running along the exterior for decoration; some of the handle is still intact. Brown glaze is visible on the interior of the vessel. The micaceous inclusions suggest the pottery is local Totnes type ware; this storage jar was possibly made at Bridgetown Pomeroy, near Totnes, where wasters of the same type of pottery have been found. (John Allan, pers comm, October 2011).
