A group of 6 Hearth stones of probable Iron Age to Medieval date (400 BC-AD 1800). The stones are sub-ovate, with cracking and pitting resulting in the partial loss of portions of some of the stones. The stones each have a fire blackened side. The stones are composed of metamorphic stone with a high quartz content. This sort of material is impossible to date without scientific analysis, and there is occupation evidence in this area from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Medieval and Post Medieval to modern period. Given that the stones were recovered from t…

Description: The fragment of tile is sub-rectangular and has a blackened front from smoke/fire. The object has the mould pessed design of a heraldic shield of arms consisting of a two-headed imperial eagle within straight sided shield. The fabric of the brick is light orange unoxidised within, with common small flecks of chalk througout. A collection of nine pieces of hard baked fired clay and three incomplete cobbles which also show evidence of heat. They are possibly the remains of a hearth. The clay is soft and yellow coloured. It is in irregular sub rounded lumps. There are occasional pieces of other material (stone or charcoal) incorporated within the clay. The cobbles have rounded original surfaces, but all are broken, probably owing to high heat. The largest is of a pinkish colour stone; the other two are more yellowy grey.
