An incomplete lead alloy possible flint holder for a hand-gun of probable late 18th century date (c. 1750-c. 1800). The object is oval in plan with cut-out slot at one end. The front has raised vegetal (branch-like) decoration. The rear face is flat and plain. The object is grey overall. Length: 32.0mm; width: 25.0mm; thickness: 2.1mm. Weight: 7.76g.

A cast lead flint holder for a hand-gun of probable late 18th century date (c. 1750-c. 1800). The object is ‘tongue-shaped' and the curved edges of the front face are regularly serrated. Close to the straight end there is an irregular shaped aperture (11.0 x 6.1mm). At the front, within the serrated border, raised marks read: 1811 or 18H or 78H. The rear face is plain and flat. 31.9 x 29.4 x 1.6mm. Weight: 10.57g. Similar lead holders have been found on the foreshore immediately in front of the Tower of London (national armoury store). Small pocket percussion pistol, probably dating to around 1820s-30s. The gun has an octagonal barrel which becomes square where all the mechanisms would fit; there is a small round hole where a pin would have fitted for the percussion cap mechanism and the metal curves down to possibly form the trigger. The gun would probably have had a maple handle and has been gilded indicating a high quality pistol (although much of this has worn off). There is a small makers mark impressed onto the side of the barrel but it is not decipherable. This type of pistol would have fired small lead …
