A possible incomplete copper alloy Bronze Age hammer, c. 1500-1000 BC. The artefact has a square-based pyramid shape with four broken, tapering, undecorated sides. The square base has a roughly circular hole revealing a hollow centre. On the corner of two sides are worn edges suggesting that there was a pre-existing hole on this face, possibly indicating that a wooden handle was inserted through this hole. The artefact has a mid-greenish brown patina. It has been suggested that this is a small Bronze Age socketed hammer, similar to SF-E8DB40, or the beak of a Bronze Age anv…

A copper-alloy looped socketed hammer dating to the late Bronze Age, c. 1600-800 BC. The hammer is broadly rectangular in plan, but does taper slightly from the socketed end to the tip. In profile the tapering is more evident. In section it is square. The socketed end has a raised but flat collar. The socket is sub-square in shape with rounded internal corners. A fragment of the collar is broken and missing. The tip of the hammer is rounded and assymetrical. There is a D-shaped loop on one side with an oval hole. A casting seam is evident o…

The hammer is long and narrow, sub-rectangular/sub-trapezoidal in plan and section (total length 85.2mm). One end contains a socket with a sub-rectangular, almost circular and slightly expanded mouth (external dimensions 14.6mm tall x 14.3mm wide*, internal dimensions of mouth 11.1mm tall x 12mm wide x appx.12.1mm deep) with a narrow moulded collar (8.5mm long). Heavily corroded Post-Medieval hammer head. The handle socket through the centre of the head is oval and there is a 34mm pin in this, with the head of the pin having a diameter of 13mm and the main body having a diameter of 5mm. The hammer head is broadest at this part and is waisted before flaring out again to form the circular end. The hammer head itself is 19mm thick at this point and 21mm wide. The flat, circular end of the hammer has a diameter of 24mm. On the other side, it tapers to a pointed end. This type of hammer was likely used in metalworking.

Copper alloy late Bronze Age socketed hammer head. The socketed end has a single raised collar with broadly square-shaped (externally 23.7mm x 23.3mm) socket and tapers slightly to a more rectangular shaped head (17.7mm x 21.7mm) which has been slightly upset through use. The overall length of the head is 64 mm with a socket depth of approximately 44 mm providing a 20 mm long solid bronze striking section. Both casting seams have been removed and only a scant trace on one side is evident. The dark green to brown patina is largely complete save small eroded areas around the mouth of th…

A Post Medieval, copper alloy hammer, probably a jeweller's or glazier's hammer dating from about AD 1600 - 1900. The hammer has a pair of pierced square fixing lugs to hold it to a shaft, a remnant of which is still present. An iron rivet would have connected these lugs and passed through the wooden handle. The head has a conical striking peen, with three circumferential bands decorating it: a double collar at the base, a bulbous one next, decorated with oblique incised lines, and finally a faint double collar part way along the peen. The gently curved claw bifurcates at the end, whe…

A complete, cast, socketed copper alloy hammer dating to the Late Bronze Age (1000-700 BC). Description: The body of the hammer has been relatively crudely finished with the casting seems very prominent and unworn. The socket is sub-square in cross-section at the mouth with a double moulding on the exterior. The main body of the hammer is narrow below the moulded collar and flares slightly to the working face. The face and body are as one unlike modern hammers so the bell/poll is from the socket to the working face. The face has a convex surface and is a rounded square in plan, …

A probable fragment of copper alloy Bronze Age socketed implement, probably a hammer, dating from about 1400 BC - 700 BC. Only the middle part of the hammer survives. One end is an incomplete socket os rounded rectangular cross-section. The socket tapers from the broken outer end where it is 32.9mm wide and 16mm thick to 29.4mm wide and 22.8mm thick at the end of the socket. One face of the socket is missing, showing the internal end to be rounded. The solid head of the hammer is irregular and uneven, and may have been mis-cast. A fragment of an iron object, possibly the cross-pene of a hammer, possibly dating to the Roman period. Rectangular-sectioned object, broken at one end, tapering slightly towards the other. If a fragment of a hammer, it may be of Hanemann's (2014) Type 2, the most common Roman hammer type. Cross-pene hammers of this type are usually associated with metalwork, although the ubiquity of this tool type and its distribution within London, suggests that they were also used as general-purpose household tools.
