An incomplete cast copper-alloy finial of possible post-Medieval date (1500-1800). The main part is baluster in form and pentagonal (five-faced) in cross-section. At the centre of the flat top of the main part, there is a projection terminating in a broken loop, rectangular in cross-section (14.3 x 4.6mm). On the narrow face of this projection, at each side, a curved projection may represent a stylised animal head. At the centre of the pentagonal base there is a circular stub of a rod or shaft. On the upper half of the main part, on two faces, there is a narrow vertical ins…

Cast copper alloy (brass) section of the stem or finial making up a bedstead frame or perhaps from a short stand like a fireside rest, as it is hard to tell what the original length was with both ends having been broken off. The stem has a bulbous base, about 20 mm in diameter, defined by a concentric line beneath it. The body then tapers towards a rib, about 12 mm in diameter, at the upper end, below the break. The design is meant too imitate turned wood. Similar stands can be seen illustrated in The Victorian Catalogue of Household Goods (1992), but originally published in 188…

A bronze finial or terminal. It is 19mm tall from base to top. It is crowned by a small ball 4mm high and 6 in diameter: below this is a picher-shaped or barrel-shaped element which is biconical or carinated, reaching 11mm diameter over 11mm height. The lower flan or base of the object is 3mm deep and 13.5mm in diameter. On the underside, which is flat, there are iron corrosion products suggesting that this was the terminal to a tang or other extension made of iron, onto which it was fastened. These objects are generally thought to be Roman but might possibly be late Medieval. It could…

A medieval, cube-shaped finial with slightly rounded facets, four of which are decorated with circles inlaid with gold and carrying a four point design drawn in niello. Within the spandrel formed by the meeting of each of these circles is placed another, smaller circle in relief. This decoration might indicate the ‘top’ of the finial. The top facet has gold inlay but without any niello, whilst the bottom has no decoration, merely evidence of a break where it has been wrenched from the object to which it was originally attached. Dimensions and metal content: X-ray fluo…
