Copper alloy and iron possible dividers fragment. The broader end of a square section bar, expanded at its proximal end where it is rounded, drilled, slotted and attached to the inserted stub of a narrower bar and secured by a ferrous metal [probably steel] pin. If not part of a pair of dividers, then perhaps a part from some related item of drawing or surveying equipment. It is unclear when Roxby cum Risby parish was enclosed, though nearly half of Manley Wapentake had been enclosed by 1600; such an episode could provide a context for such a loss. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1…

Incomplete post-medieval copper-alloy dividers, missing virtually all of one arm and approximately half of the other. They have a globular handle, octagonal in cross-section, which forms a hinge between the two arms, with a pin passing through the handle serving as the pivot.  There is a narrow circumferential collar between the base of the handle and the octagonally cross-sectioned shaft of the more compete arm. This latter extends a short distance before reducing width by half in order to make room for the mostly missing arm. Thus it becomes trapezoidal in cross-section from her…

The decoration is restricted to two incised chevrons above, and two below a pair of incised transverse lines just above the reduction in width. The lower section one arm is quite corroded and the original pointed ends are missing. AT the pivit point, both arms have a rounded terminal throu…

A pointed copper alloy object of post medieval date; possibly one arm of a pair of dividers or perhaps a pin from a large harness buckle. The object is 99.4mm in length and has a long shaft, at the mid point of which is a step with a decorative moulding and which then tapers in a long curve to a sharp point. Behind this mid point the shaft is rectangular in cross section and terminates in an oval hinge or articulation block with an iron spindle.

A complete pair of mathematical or surveyors’ dividers dating to the Post Medieval period, likely 17th-18th centuries. The globular 12.1mm wide, 11.9mm deep head of the dividers forms the hinge fulcrum, below the head the trapezoidal sectioned arms descend 20mm before they curve out and back down to form a circular aperture in the dividers. Below the expanded section there are curled lip mouldings on the arms as they taper to a point. The dividers have a rough brown patina with small sections of green patinated original surface. Similar dividers have been recorded on the PAS d…

Fragment of a pair of copper-alloy post-medieval dividers. Only the hinge and two short lengths of the arms are extant, the latter terminating in worn breaks. The arms are sub-square in cross-section at the hinge end (i.e. square, except that the two inner corners of each are bevelled). The arms are closed shut. To form the hinge one of the arms bifurcates and expands to form two flat partially-circular plates with a gap between them to receive a similarly-shaped plate projecting from the end of the other arm. All three plates are pierced by a copper alloy pivot. Parallels o…

Single arm of a pair of post-medieval copper-alloy dividers. At one end is the broken and worn stub of a loop, which is part of the hinge. Before this is an expanded collar-like moulding. More specifically it is a short (1-2mm) projection from one of the edges of the arm on the same plane as the loop. There seems to have been another on the opposite side, but it a has broken off and the break is worn. The arm itself is rectangular in cross-section, its short sides being parallel with the loop and its long sides perpendicular to it. Viewed with the loop edge-on. The arm gradually expand…

A complete Post-Medieval copper alloy pair of drawing dividers dating to c AD 1600-1800. The item has a pair of tapering legs, probably plano-convex in section, the flat face designed to allow the two legs to meet when closed. The head, from which the legs emanate, is a slightly flattened spherical shape, pierced at the centre to take a large rivet, domed on both sides. Below this head, the hinge, is what appears to be a collar. Below the hinge, on a flattened part of the top of the legs, and on both surfaces, are a set of transverse grooves surmounted by single oblique grooves, appa…
