A complete copper-alloy die stamp of probable post-medieval date (c.1600-1900) Description: The object is in the form of a cylindrical rod, with one smooth flat end. The other end is slightly domed and rougher. The domed end has two clear parallel projections, possibly 'I's'. These are 3.9mm in height and project 1.1mm from the end of the rod. They have been created by engraving the end of the rod: there are deeply engraved lines either side of the projections making them more pronounced and the sides appear to have been filed to make them ‘sharper’. …

The relief decoration comprises deeply incised scrolling foliate motif, seemingly a vine, that moves along the rectangular face diagonally from edge to edge creating smaller triangular shaped voids each filled with a scroll. There are five scrolls in total, and a lateral groove encloses the motif around the edge. The appears to be traces of white paste in the recessed areas created by the motif. One short ed…

Lead die stamp. Cast disc with engraved motifs which include a plain cross off-centre within an oval or kite-shaped field, a bordering ring of pellets, and either gouges, letters – perhaps W HN - or indistinct features along one quarter of the edge. The back appears beaten. The proposed function seems supported by the crisp impression obtained from the object, though manufacture of a stamp of still-malleable material seems odd, and may suggest the fragility of whatever was stamped with it. The size and cross motif might suggest this stamp was used to mark unconsecrated communion waf…

A cast, copper-alloy early medieval (Early to Middle Anglo-Saxon) die stamp for making pressblech foils, dating to the late 6th to 7th century. The die stamp is sub-rectangular in form and cross-section. Both sides are flat, one of which is decorated with an interlace Style II or Schlaufenornamentik decoration without zoomorphic elements. The interlacing asymmetric and twisting pattern gives the design a writhing quality, but it lacks any zoomorphic elements such as a head or limbs which means that this design is not strictly Style II.
