Gold Gallic contemporary copy of a Solidus of Anastasius (491-518), possibly of the Pseudo-Merovingian coinage, c. 500-580. Copied from a coin of Constantinople. Found with associated Early Medieval finds from a ploughed cemetery site (Treasure case no. 2007 T203). Note: the BM has 7 imitations of solidi of Anastasius, but none are very similar to this piece. The obverse die matches coin number 761 on Plate XIX in Pirie's Coins of the Kingdom of Northumbria; this coin die dates from the first reign of Aethelred II (841-844). The reverse of the coin matches the reverse of coin number 1012 on Plate XXVI of the same volume; this die dates from the second reign of Aethelred II.
