A Post-Medieval silver-plated copper alloy contemporary forgery of a silver half crown of Charles I (1625-1649), Tower mint under Parliament, dating from 1643 onwards. The mint mark is the (R) which dates from 1644-1645 and the obverse is similar to the Group III half crowns, Type 3a3, third horseman with a vertical complete sword but the rider obliterated and an oval garnished shield on the reverse, Spink 2778. A large hole, 3.5 mm in diameter has been punched through the coin 6 mm in from one edge so more likely carried out to test and possibly deface the coin rather than to make it …
