Antler or cetacean ivory game piece. A cylindrical chess piece with ‘equine’ features – a nasal ridge flanked by drilled eyes being the most prominent  – and rows of multiple incised or drilled ring and dot. The form suggests this was a Knight. The first chess pieces were large and chunky objects. This identification presupposes contact with the Middle East whence the game of chess came to the West, and parallels in various materials including jet are usually dated to the 12th century, perhaps with reference to the Crusades. Suggested date: Medieval, 1…

A complete but worn Bishop chess piece dating to the late 19th century or 20th century. The chess piece is cast out of plaster of Paris or crushed stone, and was probably dipped in resin. The surface has a mottled white matrix comprising irregular, frequent grains of a solid cream coloured substance. The chess piece has fine cracks all over, as well as holes in the base caused by air bubbles during the casting process. The perimeter of the base is also chipped as would be expected with a moulded piece. The Bishop is seated on an ornate chair. He wears a mitre decorated with a rib r…

A complete and corroded Modern cast lead bishop chess-piece (c. 1940-c. 1945). This piece is collared and waisted and has a small knop at the top of the mitre terminal. The mitre has a groove on each face signifying the two folding parts. The expanded base has a projection at each side to increase stability when standing. In the standing position it is tilted slightly to one side. It is partially corroded and mainly grey/off-white with patches of matt black paint, the remains of an original decorative coating. Height: 50.62mm; width at base: 22.13mm; thickness at base: 15.29m…

Bone chess piece representing an early form of King or Queen piece. The bone has been cut flat at the top and the bottom leaving a length of 32mm and a diameter of 25mm. In cross-section the piece is nearly square with rounded edges. There is an incised band around either terminal, and two curious linear grooves on the top left and bottom right hand corner on the back, 4mm in from either terminal band. It is possible that the grooves represent further bands now worn away, but the surface does not appear sufficiently worn to cause this. At one end the front of the piece has …

Possible chess piece depicting a knight, probably dating to the late 12th or early 13th century. The piece is solid and cast from copper alloy, and weighs 71.8g. The object is a fairly minimalist depiction of a knight; some detail may be missing due to surface loss. There appears to be no weapon present, but the knight holds a kite-shaped shield and wears a conical helmet suggesting the 12th- or 13th-century date. The knight sits on top of a horse with a caparison and saddle cloth (again suggesting the above date). A sermon text based on the allegory of chess written by Jacobo de Cess…
