Probably a complete copper alloy bung. The object is circular and comprises a solid cone surmounted by a disc or flange with a knob in the centre. The knob is formed from a disc which is slightly concave topped by a knop. The small disc of the knob has been broken off in the past. Looking at the disc/flange from above there are three, possibly four, round red coloured areas. It is not clear whether theses are pieces of a more iron rich metal cut off flush with the disc or if they are the remains of something which protruded from the disc. If there are four there are two pairs, ot…

Lead possible bung or stopper. Cast slightly tapered cylindrical object with flat upper and lower sides and a moulded hole of diameter 6.4mm; patinated. The sides bear a graffito or scratched inscription made with a very thin point. Depending on which way up this is examined, it might read: CANIEA ending on a shield-shaped panel 'charged' with three straight strokes, or perhaps: MARIC[--] if inverted - other readings of these spidery characters are entirely possible, and it is uncertain whether they represent antique script or or childish scrawl. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-19…

Lead possible stopper or bung, as kindly identified by the finder. Solid cast fungiform object with a conical 'stalk' and a biconvex 'cap'; patinated overall, now gouged. The form may suggest a rubber washer or seal would be used with this if it indeed served as a stopper, while the choice of material may suggest a corrosive material was held in the container it closed. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1850. Height: 18.7mm, Diameter: 22.1mm, Weight: 31.16gms.
