Half of a post-Medieval to Modern copper alloy mould (c. AD 1600 -1850). The mould survives as the male component of a two piece mould. It has a short semi-circular opening in the edge of the upper surface, to a hollowed hemisphere within the body. The edges of the outer face is facetted. On the outer face there is a small square protrusion which would have connected into a set of tongs to hold the mould together. At each of the four corners of the inner face there is a small protrusion. These protrusions would accommodate the corresponding recess of the female component. The mou…

The male half of a copper alloy post medieval bullet mould used for the production of lead shot. The object is sub-triangular in shape, with a hemispherical recess in which a single ball could be cast. In the top of the object is a chamfered casting gate through which the lead alloy would have been poured. On the recessed side of the object are two locating pins that would have fitted into corresponding sockets in the opposite half of the mould. It is possible that there was a third pin, and it is now missing, but there is little evidence of it's existence. The external face has a cen…

Complete iron musket ball mould of the Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1700 - c. AD 1800. The mould has two curved arms, like scissors, meeting in a flat hinge with a central circular pin or rivet in it, visible on one side. It terminates in barrel shaped jaws which enclose a hollow spherical section in between the two halves. The two halves are circular in plan and semi-circular in profile on the inside with flat outer edges. Each half has a semi-circular groove cut out of one edge so that when the mould is held closed and they meet up, they form a circular hole for the mo…

The mould is of hinged type and is incomplete, missing one of the handles and with the other truncated (with a surviving length of 44.5mm and a weight of 11.2g). The surviving handle is integral and of a consistent circular-section (with a diameter of 2.8mm and a surviving length of 26mm). The mould section is rectangular (11.8mm long, 11.2mm wide and 10.5mm deep) with an aperture on its top surface leading to a circular mould chamber to form a sphere (of 5 - 6mm diameter). One part of a post-medieval two-piece stone mould that was probably used for making lead shot. The mould probably dates to the 17th century. The stone is cuboid and broken at one end. The mould has been designed so that it can be used to cast two different guages of shot depending on from which side the molten lead is poured. One side contains two concave circular depressions each with a narrow casting gate and a funnel-shaped opening at the side of the mould. Five smaller circular depressions with siimilar channels are located below the two larger ones, with their gates opening to…

Post medieval copper alloy and iron bullet mould, 17mm long and wide and 9mm deep. The object is in fair condition and weighs 10.07grams. The object is sub triangualt in form and semi-circular in section. It has a large central semi-spherical hole, c. 9mm in diameter, with a small semi-conical shaft connecting it to its outer edge. Each corner has a small circular recess to hold the prong from the corresponding half, and therefore the mould, in place. The outer surface is heavily corroded and probably conceals an Iron protrusion which may have attached the mould to handles.

The mould itself comprises two small flat pans 18.11mm in diameter and 8.3mm thick with a matching notch on the edge of each forming a hole when closed measuring 6.3mm in diameter. The surface of the mould has been heavily corroded in the past but appears quite stable now. The mould creates shot of .55 calibre most likely for a pistol, probably 18th century. (J. It is made from two halves pivoted or hinged together to resemble a pair of scissors. It survives complete, except for one handle terminal which is missing. The surviving handle terminal droops slightly inwards. The mould halves are both hemispherical, internally and externally. There is no decoration. On one side, both halves have a small hole on the seam, to allow the molten lead to be poured in. The central rivet is still in place and the handles can be moved.
