An incomplete late Medieval to Early Post-Medieval copper-alloy book fitting, dating to c.AD 1400 - 1600. Howsam type A.3.  It is sub-rectangular and formed of one sheet copper alloy. The plate has a flared and scalloped open end. At the opposing end terminates in an old break. It is decorated in the centre with an annulet and three concentric rings. An incomplete pierced copper alloy hooked plate most likely a book fitting dating to c. AD 1500-1700. The object is made of a rectangular flat plate which is truncated by a straight diagonal break running across one surfaces. At its terminal there is a projecting rectangular tab that is slightly crescent in profile. The wider plate is pierced by a circular hole (3.5mm diameter) indicating it would have been mounted on an object. It has a reddish brown somtimes green brown patina, The object is 36.4mm long, 17mm wide, and the metal is 0.9mm thick. It weighs 3.53 grams. …

A pair of plates of thickness 1.1mm, the outermost with straight sides and with a short U-shaped lug at one end, expanded and bifurcated towards a fishtail terminal at the other, where it is raggedly torn by rough removal from its setting. An incomplete Medieval to early Post-Medieval cast copper alloy umbonate book mount (Howsam type B.1.2) dating c. AD 1350-1550.  The tri-lobed object has a central raised, hollow, circular boss with a raised collar at the base surrounded by three incomplete attachment lugs that each have a circular rivet hole truncated by worn break. A copper alloy book fitting; a book clasp hook-piece of Medieval to early post-Medieval date, about AD 1400 - 1600, of Howsam type A.3. The plate is broadly rectangular, with a slightly flared attachment end which has a single rivet hole through it containing traces of iron. There is a blunt hook projecting at the other end.  The plate is corroded and appears to be undecorated. It has a brown and green patina with rust around the rivet. A Medieval copper alloy book-clasp, dating to c.AD 1200 - 1400. Howsam type A.8.4 The clasp is formed of a single sheet of copper-alloy, folded in half at the terminal and secured at the attachment end with a single rivet. There is a further single flat headed rivet in the loop. There is a circular lobe adjacent to the terminal, it is hollow domed. It is a book clasp of Howsam Type A3.  The clasp has a flat hook at one end projecting from a transverse rectangular plate. The body is lozenge shaped and there is a sub-rectangular plate at the other end.  This plate has a single rivet hole in the centre with the iron rivet still in place, with iron corrosion surrounding it. Copper alloy book mount. The has been made from a pressed sheet that has a domed centre with hollowed-back, a pierced central circular hole (3mm in diameter) would have held a rivet which is now missing. A heavily corroded copper alloy book clasp. This example is rectangular in plan with two semicircular notches on either side and three V-shaped notches running down the rear edge. The forward edge has a narrowed tab that has been bent around to form a hook. The face is decorated with six square stamps that that have an eight paralleled flowed within and a ring a dog at the rear.    Artefacts such as this have been discovered during excavation in York which dated to the 15th and 16th centuries (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2937-2939)

A small post Medieval copper alloy book clasp (cf. Howsam type A.3 (hooked fishtail)). The object has a slightly flared terminal at the rear end, with a scalloped rear edge and a single rivet hole in the middle which retains a copper alloy rivet. The front of the clasp has moulded decoration with two transverse bands of pellets and lozenges towards the front and oblique panels of what may be fleur-de-lys flanking the rivet hole. A small and incomplete hook projects from the front edge. Circa 16th-17th century.
