A complete, wheel thrown, local Upchurch ware, Roman "Poppyhead " form beaker, dating AD 100-150.
Description: The base is very narrow at 39.40mm diameter with a slight out-turned, finely turned rim base, 2.6mm wide. From the base the sides flare quickly outwards to a 96.4mm diameter, to form a globular body. The body is decorated with fine rouletting in parallel bands of vertical and slanting lines from a height of 31.33mm, (where a fine line or band is etched), to a height of 70mm where a series of five fine lines or bands are incised around the shoulder. A complete ceramic wheel made Roman New Forest fine ware indented beaker, which has been recently repaired in one of the indented areas. The beaker dates to the period AD 270-340. It has a light grey fabric with a fine sand temper which has been hard fired. There are oxidized orange patches on the interior where the glaze has not been properly applied. The surface has been slipped with a dark red-brown/purple slip with black areas. There are a few shiny areas on the glaze which are probably from when the beaker was reapired. Object is a base of an indented Roman beaker. Object is 49mm in diameter, approximately 14mm thick, and weighs 34g. Left image shows inside of beaker, right image shows underside of the base. White and brown in colour with slight red-ish tinge underneath, potter's finger marks can be seen on slip on sides of base. Not whole intact beaker but in very good condition with few cracks. Possibly 2-4th century.

Two fragments of Roman London eggshell ware (AD90-130 Davies, Richardson and Tomber 1994) with rouletted decoration and a flared rim. Fabric is pale grey and extremely thin. The two fragments can be refitted to form the wall and rim of a beaker. This type of pottery is manufactured from the late Neronian to the end of the Hadrianic period, flourishing mainly in the early second century.
A parallel can be found in Davies, Richardson and Tomber 1994, pg 149 fig.127 No.802.

Fragment of a glass monochrome globular beaker, probably dating to the late 8th or 9th century. The fragment comprises a section of rim and body. The rim is circular in section and has a pronounced ridge on the interior where it meets the interior wall. On the exterior, the rim blends smoothly with the vessel wall. The body is decorated with three transverse lines; the centre one is formed by two lines that have a small gap between them.
