An incomplete stone perforated battleaxe of probable very late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date (2500-1800 BC). Probably belonging to Roe Group 1, early form. Only about 50% of the axe has survived but it is finely. It is broadly sub-triangular / wedge shaped with gentle concave sides, expanding towards the cutting edge with a flared crescentic edge. A Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age stone battleaxe (larger examples are also known as axe hammers) dating from about 3300 BC - 1000 BC.The body is broadly egg-shaped, tapering to a blunt point at one end, and a narrow rounded butt at the other. A possibly unfinished late neolithic or early bronze age sandstone battleaxe or axe hammer dating from about 3300 BC - 1000 BC. The implement has been ground from a well-consolidated quartzitic red sandstone, which does not occur naturally in the area (pers comm Robert Masheder). A ground stone battle axe, probably of Scandinavian origin and dating from the Neolithic period. The axe, which survives intact, is of flattened-oval section, tapering to a wedge-shaped, downward-curving blade. The cylindrical socket is located close to the butt of the axe, where there is a rearward, hammer-like projection of circular section. The tool has been made from a medium-textured grey stone with a strand-like structure. Half a polished stone battle axe. The surviving edge is very worn, presumably as a result of use. The axe is broken across its socket, half of which is present. This break is also fairly worn. Small and complete polished stone battleaxe of the Early Bronze Age. Length 116mm, width 36.5mm and 38mm thick. Weight 251.94g. Viewed from either face, the sides are convex in profile, one side being slightly more convex than the other side. The circular perforation is "hour-glass" shaped in cross-section, its maximum diameter is 28mm and its minimum diameter is 14.5mm.
