A broken, possibly re-used, bifacially flaked axehead, or possibly a rough-out for polishing, dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2350 BC. Made on a primary flake with cortex remaining on the dorsal face. The flint is light grey on the dorsal side with a medium gloss patina but has developed a lighter grey to white low gloss patina on the ventral face. The implement is subtriangular in plan, the dorsal face is fairly flat with small scars of flake removal around the edge. The ventral face is convex creating a trapezoidal profile wit…

A probable Neolithic stone axehead roughout of Neolithic date, c.4000-2500 BC. The object is in the early stages of shaping, with scars from large removals on both faces and does not appear to be a flake but rather a rock in the process of being shaped. The bifacial object is broadly sub-oval in plan, with an irregular lozenge section. The shaping has not progressed to a point where it is possible to discern a blade or butt end, though one end is more pointed that the other, which has a flat, angled end formed by excess material ending in a hinged fracture on one face. One face of the …

A complete Neolithic flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing, dating to circa 4000-1600 BC. It is broadly elongated oval in plan and oval in section. It is bifacially flaked on a nodule of opaque, beige coloured flint. The flaking is multi-directional and invasive. The cutting edge is rounded with longitudinal flaking. The butt is rounded and narrower than the cutting edge.  The axehead would have been intended to have a polished finish whereupon it would have been hafted.

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a partially naturally fractured tabular nodule of mottled, opaque, brown-grey flint with a paler beige patina. There are areas of cortex and sub-cortex on both faces, but substantially less on the naturally fractured face. The worked face has multiple semi-invasive flake removals at the cutting edge and along the sides. The other, naturally fractured face, there is some more haphazard flaking, perhaps aimed at thinning the body and creating a viable striking platform. It appears …

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a tabular nodule of mottled, opaque,  grey flint with a paler grey patina. Vestigial areas of cortex and subcortex remain on both faces , particularly around the edge of the butt. The cutting edge is unfinished and has some post-depositional damage. It was probably squared and was formed by long, invasive, longitudinal flaking. The sides of the axehead taper from the cutting edge to the broad, rounded butt. The flaking along the edges is fairly regular, creating a zig zag.&n…

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a tabular nodule of mottled, opaque, pale grey flint with a paler grey patina. Vestigial areas of cortex and subcortex remain on both faces. The cutting edge is unfinished. It is crudely rounded with some short, longitudinal flaking to create the edge. This has been unsuccessful in removing a steeply angled facet on one face which would preclude use of the axehead in it's existing form. The sides of the axehead are tapering from the cutting edge to the thinned, rounded butt. The flakin…

A worked lithic implement made from a pale grey flint, 63.4mm in length, with sub triangular cross section and flaked removals to all surfaces. The object tapers to one end which has been lost, the wider end also appears to have a substantial break. There is a large patch of dark grey cortex running along the dorsal spine. Possibly an incomplete adze, pick or axehead roughout / preform of Neolithic date (c. 4000-2500 BC).

A perhaps Lower Palaeolithic (500, 000 - 150,000 BC) stone probable core tool, perhaps an axehead roughout or possibly a flake. It is made perhaps of Devon limestone with possible calcite bands running through (Mike Trevarthen pers. comm. Dec. 2019). The material is dark grey in colour and 'soft' to the touch. The object is ovate in shape and plano-convex in cross-section with several transverse ridges to the flatter (ventral if struck) face. The bulb of percussion isn't obvious and if struck, it could be at either end, both of which are slightly raised and one of which is additionall…

Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age axe head roughout made from a tertiary flake of a Lakeland tuff. The tuff is similar to, but coarser grained than Langdale tuff. The roughout is thick-butted, double convex in section, sub-rectangular in plan, has crudely sub-rounded ends, and expands in plan from both the butt and the blade end to reach its maximum width 68mm from the blade end. Dates to between c2700 and c1600 BC. The length is 177mm, width 83mm, thickness 52mm, and the weight 711.4g. The rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash and has a fine grained composition with…

Incomplete cast copper alloy axehead roughout or blank, triangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile and section, dating from the Early Bronze Age. The sides of the axe were once straight but are now abraded and taper towards the narrow butt end which is worn to almost a point. The surface of the roughout has developed a dark brown patina and the sides have exposed the light green corrosion product beneath through wear and damage since deposition. Schmidt & Burgess (1981) illustrate similar rough flat axes with narrow butt ends and straight sides from Birnie, Morayshire and Ang…

Small, asymmetrical biface, all flake removals are hard hammer struck, of orange patinated flint, with some recent damage to both ends and one side revealing the original mottled grey flint. Possibly a trial piece or reject of an attempt at an axe or adze. No tranchet flake removal to the "cutting" edge noted. With no diagnostic features, a broad date range of Mesolithic to Neolithic is likely.

A bifacially worked flint implement. Probably a flaked axe or axe roughtout. The piece is made on a naturally fractured nodule fragment and apperas to have been broken in manufacture; a single perpendicular cross-body break with marked lip on one side suggests end-shock during knapping. The (presumed) rearward part of the object is absent. Shallow to semi-shallow irregular flaking scars are evident on three facets; the fourth retains original fractured surface, providing an assymetric trapezoidal cross-section. The margins are broadly mid-line, but one is rather irregular, both have b…

Grey-green stone possible polished axe roughout. An oval pebble of biconvex lentoid section with opposed curving edges, one more regular than the other, and with a rough and uneven surface. The finder kindly suggests this to be a possible Neolithic polished axe head fragment, though the rough surface would be more likely on a later stone 'battle axe' or maul. The form and profile are, however, reminiscent of a polished axe head. This stone might have been recovered from glacial Drift rather than from one or other of the attested sources of polished axes. Associated worked flints were …

A thin flaked flint implement, possibly an axe rough-out. One end rounded, one end rectilinear. The object is bifacially flaked and broken at one end. The flaking is well executed using a soft hammer to form a slightly plano-convex cross section. The margins taper slightly inward from the break to an irregular sub-rounded butt. The break is cross-body and is typical of end-shock during manufacture. The original flint appears to be light grey and mottled, now with an all over pale grey glossy patina, with some reddish brown ferrous staining. Date: Neolithic 4000 to 2351 BC. Dimen…
