Pale grey flint with cortex, cobble. A fragment of a nodule trimmed to rectangular form by hard hammer strike. This would be apt to use in building or road-mending, which were possibly agencies contributing to the importation of the wealth of patinated flint reported from the vicinity. The struck surfaces are misted but not as highly patinated as much of that material. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1900 Length: 78.5mm, Width: 62mm, Thickness: 46.5mm, Weight: c.370gms

Lead possible architectural fragment. A small cast plano-convex object with a central round moulded aperture of diameter 8.3mm, and with its edges on the convex lower side [as poured] apparently formed by the cooling of successive dribbles of molten lead. This resembles poured lead used to anchor and retard corrosion of iron used either as masonry cramps or railings, though here at a rather small scale. This usage is best recorded for the post-medieval period. Alternatively, perhaps a hideously abortive homemade whorl. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700 Height: 14.6mm, Length: 3…

A fragment of Post Medieval stone pillar capital, dating to c. AD 1550-1700. The find part of a circular ribbed capital with a flat base.  Above the ribbing is a circular band and at the top of the capital there appears to be a layer of cement with a small, flat sherd of slate which has become stuck in the mixture. Towards the centre of the capital, the stone steps down to the remains of a semi-circular ledge, and down again to a narrower ledge. Just below the centre of this is a vertical groove as though for a support to be placed within in order to attach the capi…

A sub-circular lead artefact, probably a bedding for fixing a metal item into stone, like an early rawl plug, of probable Post Medieval date, about AD 1500 - 1900. It has one flat face, and one face with a raised sub-circular centre. The raised face is uneven. the flat face has a deep hole near one edge, and scratched marks across the face. The artefact has a mottled cream and grey patina. The mass is close to one ounce, and the object may be a weight, though it is very untidily made. Incomplete, distorted, and crudely cast lead alloy openwork object. A central openwork cruciform lattice shape is set within an octagon with incurving sides. The cross-section of the tracery is lozenge-shaped with concave sides. Similar openwork lead objects are often identified as window ventilation panels, especially on medieval religious sites, but also on farmhouses up to the 17th century (ref. Finds Research Group 700-1700 datasheet 2: Some Ecclesiastical and Monastic finds, Cherry, J). They are also sometimes identified as brick or wall vents and ascribed…

A stone architectural fragment in the form of a carved human head, of Post Medieval date, probably AD 1600 - 1850. The head is that of a male with a beard and moustache. The head and neck project from a sub-square block of stone. The hair (or a wig) is depicted, with what appears to be a side parting. The ears are damaged and one is missing. The eyes have recessed pupils with the upper and lower lids moulded, as well as what appears to be a fold or "bag" under the eyes. The nose is damaged. The mouth is closed. The neck is truncated. The back of the head is integral with a plinth whic…

Architectural fragment. Probably Magnesium Limestone, as occurs near Tadcaster, Doncaster and Roche Abbey, South Yorkshire [non-specialist identification by MF]. In the Humber region, this stone was used – as at Beverley Minster – from the 1220s onwards. A moulded segment, probably from the side or jamb of a doorway from a stone building; a lack of rebates to hold glazing rules out use in a window. The block is of triangular section, with symmetrical moulding of its inner and outer sides [as set in the building wall]. At the apex of the triangle – closest to the putative opening…

Incomplete medieval lead possible wall or ceiling ornament in the form of a seven-pointed star with probably sinuous, triangular-sectioned points and a slight central boss. All the points are incomplete and three survive only as stumps. The reverse is flat. The object differs from the Clarendon Palace ornaments in that there is no central hole and it is much smaller (James, T.B. and Knight, B. in James and Robinson 1988, 226-7). There is nevertheless some similarity. See list of comparanda in NMS-C3E313. Estimated diameter >22mm. Thickness 3.3mm. 14th - 15th century.

An incomplete worked stone fragment that may be from an architectural structure, likely dating from the medieval period onwards (c.AD 1200-1900). The fragment is conical in shape with a rounded section. Towards the base is a distinctive groove and larger groove above it which may be damage rather than intentional decoration. The object is otherwise undecorated. The surface of the base is irregular and heavily worn, as is the rest of the object. The stone is a dark grey and is rich in mica, a small spot of iron staining is present on the side. Dimensions: Length 50.63mm; diam…

Lead architectural fragment. A massy cast sub-rectangular block of lead with the imprints left on two adjacent sides by flat-sided objects: the more complete was of trapezoid section measuring 16mm by 20mm, while one of the others oriented in the same direction was 23.5mm wide. The lead was probably poured to fix the ends of railings or other ferrous metalwork set into masonry, and to retard their corrosion which might otherwise split this setting. A sub-conical lead artefact, probably a bedding for fixing a metal item into stone, of probable Post Medieval date, about AD 1500 - 1900. It is 30mm in diameter at the base and 28.5mm high. It weighs 97.1g (3.4oz) and has a white patina. The plug has an uneven surface and is broadly conical, with an oval wide end and a domed narrow end. An off centre recess in the wide end may be where a metal nail was embedded in the lead.

An irregular chunk of a dense off-white stone in which crystalline structures appear to run in two distinct planes. These are exposed at either sub-oval end as a mass of  platelets set on end, with zones of a contrasting orientation on its sides exhibiting a smoother or finer-grained surface with linear striations, though still sparkling under strong lighting. It is uncertain whether this material may originate from veins in the local chalk geology, or from an imported building stone. The texture of the material appears, however, too friable for any sculptural use. It wa…

A crudely cast lead artefact, probably a lead fill used to attach a fixture into stone, of unknown date, Roman to Modern, AD 43 - 1900. It is roughly conical with a square, flat base. There is a deep, rectangular depression in the base, close to the centre; it is otherwise unmarked. The external faces are uneven. The artefact has a light grey patina. It is 28.1mm long, 27.6mm wide and 32.3mm high. It weighs 136.09g (5.2oz). It is also possible that it is a crude standing weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date, but the mass does not match any standard obvious weighing system.
