A complete Early Iron Age socketed axehead, dating to c 800-600 BC. It is of Late Bronze Age form, wedge shaped with an almost vertical cutting edge, which has rounded corners splaying outwards slightly. The upper and lower edges of the axehead are parallel, the mouth sub rectangular (with rounded corners) and the socket echoes this. The whole item is heavily corroded with a reddish brown and darker brown to black crust, flaking in places. It is uncertain whether there is a moulding at the mouth. The loop is almost central on one edge and there is a groove in its arc, as if to hold th…

Iron spearhead. Cast socket and round-section shaft of a wrought iron socketed implement with a solid shank now terminating in a tapered and coiled end. The diameter at the socket is 21.6mm, suggesting a round-section wooden shaft of diameter c.16mm. The socket is closed by a butted joint of length 41mm, and the base of the socket may have projected by c.12mm if it has not merely been broken raggedly, which is more likely. The solid shank above the socket is bent once at the top of the socket, and again, more markedly, close to the tip which is now curled. Suggested date: Late Roman, …

The sides taper inwards and terminate at a slightly rounded sub-square face. The surfaces are worn and deteriorated with pitting an encrustation of corrosion product. There is no surviving evidence of the coin design on the striking surface. The coin die measures 42.6mm in height while the striking surface is 28.3mm x 27.9mm. The coin die weighs 125.61 grams. Another iron coin weight (BH-3C854E) was found in the same field, along with a copper-alloy ro…

A complete iron socketed spearhead of Early Medieval date c. 525-585. The blade and socket are complete but heavily corroded. The socket is circular in cross-section and split on one side. It measures 140mm in length and 20mm in diameter at the wider end. Below the socket is a corroded protrusion that is the remains of an iron rivet that would have secured the blade to the shaft. The parallel sided, leaf shaped blade has gently sloping shoulders between the blade and socket shaft and is slightly lentoid in cross section. An incomplete, early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) iron spearhead dating to c.AD 525-560. Only part of the shaft and part of the blade has survived. The blade has a narrow tapering head that gives an elongated lozenge appearance. The socket is split along one side. It is very worn and corroded. The object is too badly damaged and corroded to enable the examination of ratios to pin down the spearhead type. Measurements: (surviving) Length: 121.92 mm; max width: 18.18 mm; thickness: 14.14 mm.

An incomplete early Anglo-Saxon iron shield boss. The boss is surmounted by a narrow-wasted rod in the centre (about 17mm long) which terminates in a circular disc (about 14mmin diameter) in the centre of the disc a flat triangular panel that could be the remains of a small silver plate. Below the rod, the cone has straight sloping sides and a diameter of about 90mm. The cone also appears to be thicker than normal but this maybe because of the limitations of the image and the lamination of the corroded iron. Below the cone, side walls would have extended down to the flanged ba…

It weighs 9.1Kg, and measures 185mm in height, a maximum width of 93mm and maximum depth of 87mm. It tapers slightly to the bottom suggesting it was set into a block to hold it firm. This is the simplest form of anvil and useful for forging small metal objects. The face (top) has an almost square flat surface measuring 93mm by 87mm and with quite sharp edges but rounded corners. An Early Medieval, Anglo-Saxon iron spearhead c. 550 - 650 AD. It has an elongated leaf form blade with a gradual taper into the socket which is split with an open joint down its length. The blade appearing to be lentoid in cross section, typical of Swanton's type C1 and has had the tip bent over and flattened onto the blade. There is a slight bend at the midpoint of the leaf blade and corrosion has been significant on that section, removing the outer form of the blade on each side of the centre line. The spear is heavily corroded and in poor condition.
