Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete ground and polished axehead formed of a very fine grained siliceous stone / banded flint of probable Neolithic date (3000-2000 BC). The axe is knapped from a flint which has banded colours which range from a bale cream buff through to a deep chocolate brown. There are areas of mid orange staining across the body and this is possibly as a result in the burial environment - possibly indicating deposition within soils that are iron rich or have a predilection towards iron panning / waterlogging. The matrix of the stone is smooth although areas of highly polished mid grey white…

A complete flint handaxe. The axe is essentially sub-cordate in form, but its shape is distorted by an angular projection to one side of the butt end. It has been struck on a thermal fractured flake from a larger nodule. The edges and ridges on both faces are fairly abraded or 'rolled'. A small amount of cortex remains on the ventral face and slightly more in patches on the dorsal face. There is differential patination on each face with a mottled light brown, orange stained patina covering the dorsal face, but only extending across c.40 % of the ventral face leaving the dark brown col…

A lower Palaeolithic flake dating to 800,000 - 250,000 BC, possibly Clactonian. The flake is sub-rectangular in shape and has a crested cross-section. This is a primary flake where the whole of the dorsal and ventral face are covered by a smooth light brown cortex with a rougher beige patina in some areas. There is short, scaled low angled retouch on both faces at the distal end, and in one corner of proximal end. The sides of the flake have short, stepped low angled retouch. Where there is retouch the cortex has been chipped away and has a light greyish brown patina, apart from on…

Both faces have invasive, semi-abrupt, scaled retouch. The sides of the fragment have short, scaled, low angled retouch. The distal end has an old break and a width of 28.3mm. The fragment then tapers outwards towards a wider butt which also has an old break with a width of 39.3mm. Both ends are lozenge-shaped in cross-section and are patinated with multi shades of grey and white patches. Both faces have a concave profile …

An incomplete lower Palaeolithic flint sub-cordate handaxe dating to c.300,000 - 200,000 BC. The handaxe is ovoid in plan and pointed oval in cross-section. Both faces have invasive, semi-abrupt, scaled retouch. Around the sides of the whole handaxe there are short, stepped, low angled retouch. On one face at the wide rounded butt there are angled jagged breaks which are patinated with multi shades of grey and white patches. Due to this break and the fact that it is bifacially worked, it is difficult to determine the dorsal and ventral face. The rest of the flint has a light brown …

A Lower Palaeolithic unifacial flint handaxe dating from the Acheulean period (400,000 to 160,000 years BP). The handaxe is pointed in plan and plano-convex in profile and in section (Wymer type F); it is 128.5 mm in length, 77.5 mm in width, 43.5 mm in thickness and 332.15 g in weight. The handaxe was made on a flake removed from a large beach cobble. The point of percussion is visible at the proximal butt end. The ventral face has been trimmed flat by the removal of several shallow flakes from the right margin. There is an oval inclusion, as part of a fault, of coarse cortical mater…

A probable Lower Palaeolithic (500,000 to 40,000 BC) implement: handaxe. The axe is knapped from flint which is heavily patinated, and is a mottled bright brown-orange due to iron staining. The axe is incomplete or fragmentary, and the break is across the section revealing a sub-triangular section. The break is not too recent, but does have a mottled light yellow/beige colour. The implements' overall original shape is difficult to determine, but what remains is triangular. The axe is bifacially flaked with rolled edges. The flakes vary in size but reveal conchoidal ripples. The imp…

A flint bifacial ovate hand axe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic period, originally from the collection of Roy Rainbird Clarke (1914-1963). The hand axe belongs to the Acheulean tradition and is classified by Wymer (1999) as Mode 2, Type K on page 11, fig.4. Made on a large flint flake which has been worked by the removal of flakes around the circumference of the flake to produce a roughout, followed by thinning using a soft hammer to remove shallow flakes from both faces, removing all traces of the original flint cortex. The domed dorsal face has been finished by the removal of a s…

Late Upper Palaeolithic long blade, soft hammer struck from an opposed platform core. The blade is patinated dark brown with elongated small white inclusions. There appears to be no recent damage so the original colour of the flint cannot be determined, though the bulb of percussion was broken in antiquity by a transverse bending fracture, and a spall to form a burin was struck from this break. One side near the distal end has been semi-invasively flaked (or "bruised") on the ventral face to form a shallow concavity and the mid-point to the opposite lateral edge has been steeply retou…

A complete axehead roughout/preform of Neolithic date (c. 4000-2500 BC). The axehead has been manufactured on medium grey coloured flint with large white inclusions, which has now patinated to an olive green colour which in places is extremely dark. On one face of the roughout, two concavities are visible where cortex has been preserved, as well as a smaller patch on the other face. The piece has been intensively worked and thus the original nature of the support type is unclear. The roughtout has been initiated on material which was originally grey in colour and containing large grey inclusions, but has now been stained an olive green with darker patches. Approximately 3/4 of the roughout remains, with the bottom quarter probably having been lost during manufacture. A single flake resulting from modern edge damage has been detached from the tip-end of the axe, which shows the original grey colour of the raw material. The broken end of the axe demonstrates a negative hinge fracture, …

The cutting edge measures 64mm in width and is 3mm thick. A large oval flake has been removed from one face just above the cutting edge in recent times and is likely due to plough damage. Each face of the object has been worked with flaking. The flaked sides taper evenly towards the butt end which is rectangular in cross-section.
