A complete copper alloy Roman radiate of Carausius (AD 286-293) (Reece Period 14), LEG • VI VICTRICI AVG, boar standing left. C Mint, - // CXXI. RIC V, pt 1 -; new RIC V.5 no. 2814. This is one of two specimens known for this coin honouring Legio VI Victrix; for the other piece, see Numismatic Circular (June 2000), no. 2263. FASAM-B450E7 is another piece for Legio VI which shares the same reverse die.. Diameter: 22.21mm, weight: 3.49g.

RIC V, pt  2, p. 489. no. 223.  It does appear that this is the first example of this coin known with this obverse legend - IMP C CARAVSIVS AVG - because RIC was confusing two other coins.  This is probably the first example of this precise type seen.

This is only the second example of this type known, the other being in a Private Collection. Obverse description: radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right Obverse inscription: [I]MP CARAVSI[VS] P F AV Reverse description: Sol walking left, holding whip Reverse inscription: O[RIENS] AVG Diameter: 20.09 mm; Thickness: 2.47 mm; Weight: 3.43g. The reverse of the coin is struck off centre, hence only part of the legend visible.

The obverse legend AVGGG CVM DIOCLETIANO with the same obverse type is in the Ashmolean Museum. It has a PAX AVGGG reverse. S A//C is a very rare mintmark and is only known for a handful of coins. RIC 76 has the reverse legend LAETIT AVG, rather than LAETITIA AVG. This is the first coin of this type Sam Moorhead has seen. Reverse: PAX AVGGG, Pax standing left holding vertical sceptre and branch in upraised right hand. C.f RIC vol. V, p. 550, no. 1, Shiel (1980) p. 8, nos. 9-11. This coin is the third of this type to be recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme (see NMS-EBB3 and BUC-158958 for the other two examples). There are now 19 examples of this coin in Sam Moorhead's corpus for RIC.
