A pointed retouched flint blade, possibly of late Upper Paleolithic date, 84.5mm in length, lanceolate in form and struck from a brown coloured flint. It has a trapezoidal cross section and a slightly curved side profile. There is low angle sub-parallel retouch along the entirety of one long side and along two thirds of the other, on the dorsal surface only, running to the distal tip, which has a triangular cross section and has been retouched around and across its entirety with semi abrupt and low angle retouch, to refine a working point. The distal end of the ventral s…

A  Lower Palaeolithic bifacial flint handaxe of Acheulean tradition dating to c. 500,000 to 250,000 BC. This is a 'ficron' type handaxe which belongs to the Middle Acheulean tradition. Acording to Wymer (1999) typology, the handaxe is sub-triangular in plan, with straight sides (edge type e), a slightly rounded tip (point type i) and a flat based butt (butt type d).  There are multiple large flaking scars covering both the dorsal and ventral sides with slightly finer flake removal along the edges. The whole artefact has orange/brown iron staining as well as heavy ab…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Almost a complete barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green, H.S. (1980) Green low type, though the barbs are around the same length as the tang (Green lows have longer barbs than the tang) the general form of the notches and the slightly drooping barbs fit within that group, there is a tiny amount of recent damage; one corner of the (rectangular) tang is missing as is the very tip if the point, otherwise it is in pristine condition, the flint is glossy, dark brown/grey with a very slight misty patination to parts of the surface, both faces are completely covered with invasive pressure flak…

Tertairy ?soft hammer struck flake with the bulb of percussion removed and neatly trimmed to a triangular shape by direct, steep percussion predominantly to the dorsal face, of slightly mottled dark grey flint with no patination. This is very likely to be an unfinished arrowhead, the profile is very straight for a struck flake, and the thickness is within the perfect range (4.6 mm), the trimming has evened out the curve already, the flake seems to have been worked into a blank then misplaced before the piece was extensively pressure flaked to its final shape, it is very likely this was…

Complete geometric microlith, of mid grey flint with misty paler grey patination, of Jacobi, R. (1978) Group 4, obliquely, finely, and very steeply retouched (c. 90 degrees to the faces) to form a convex “back” to the also convex sharp edge opposing the blunt retouch, the whole flint giving a lenticular plan form with an isosceles triangle cross section. Mesolithic, possibly late due to the small size, 7,000 to 4,000 BC.

Incomplete tiny leaf-shaped arrowhead, of Green, H. S. (1980) type 4 A, of slightly lighter patinated dark grey flint, the very tip of the base of this point is broken transversely. The dorsal face is very finely and invasively pressure flaked so some of the flake scars overlap at the centre of this face, the ventral face is hardly worked at all, just a few pressure fakes to form the point, this is probably due to the natural curvature of a struck flake; only flakes need to be removed from the curved parts as an arrowhead must be straight in profile to fly in a straight path, the …

A complete, tertiary flake/tool, semi-hard hammer struck (pronounced bulb of percussion, no bulbar scar), of sub-trapezoidal section. The dorsal face has several flake scars from a platform orientated 90 degrees from the main axis of striking, these appear to have been detached from the core before the main blow was struck to make this flake/tool, the result is one lateral edge pre-retouched with the terminations of oblique flake scars, the opposing edge is more of a knife-like cutting edge, all thin edges are now damaged (obscuring any original retouch) from the actions of the waves a…

The dorsal face has a stack of four hinged termination flakes, failed and repeated attempts to thin the apex in the middle of this face, with a further attempt at the bottom left (if viewed with the point uppermost) has also hinged. The ventral face is centripetally flaked to shape but has left the remnants of a large hard hammer struck bulb of percussion at the butt where the flakes didn&r…

Small, incomplete handaxe of Wymer, J. J. (1999) type E/?J, of light grey/brown misty patination over a dark chocolate brown colour, the point has been broken recently at an angle revealing that the flint was originally dark brown, some of the high points to the flake scars are iron stained from contact with agricultural machinery. All surfaces have been modified by flaking so no original surfaces of the “blank” nodule or thermal fracture this handaxe was made from remain. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

The ventral surface is slightly convex near the point then becomes slightly concave towards the proximal end due to a negative scar and percussion ripples. Reference: Green, H.S., 1980. Asymmetrical laurel leaf point or knife, made from a thick, elongated primary of secondary flake of off-white patinated flint with patches of rusty iron oxide stains to both faces. All flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck, especially the very large and deep removal on one face (ventral), the opposing face (dorsal) has a large tranchet flake removal to the top of the cutting edge, this would have served to sharpen the entire cutting edge in one blow, one of the defining features of Mesolithic flint knapping, the axes and adzes of the Neolithic achieved a sharp cutting edge by smaller flake removals and/or grinding and polishing the surfac…

Small, asymmetric handaxe in fairly fresh condition, of mottled grey flint, now lightly patinated dark brownish apart from the cortex extant to the dorsal face, this is thin, but retains the chalky off-white colour. Being under ten cm long, it is classified as a Wymer (1999) type E, the asymmetry to the profile (plano-convex) and plan (one edge appears to have been intentionally blunted, for handling?) is probably due to the shape of the blank from which it was made from, likely to have been a thermal (frost) fracture or a large struck flake, something of similar cross section to begin…
