Silver, Roman Republican, possibly clipped, denarius of Mark Anthony, dating to the year 41 BC (Reece Period: 1). Obverse depicts bust of Anthony right, the legend reads M.ANT.IMA [ ] BAR BAT R P. Reverse depicts bust of Octavian right. Minted by the officers of M. Antonius (and honours Octavian) whilst on the move with him in 41 BC. The reverse depicts two Legionary Standards, with a Legionary eagle between them. It is inscribed LEG XVI.
These coins were struck by Mark Antony for the use of his fleet and legions when he was preparing for the struggle with Octavius, which culminated in the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September, 31 BC (Grueber, 1970, 526).
